DOS= denial of service
basically some script kiddies attacking the web server with hundreds and thousands of hits, bogging down traffic.
And then there's the DDOS, Distributed Denial Of Service attack - same thing, but on a larger scale, coming from 'owned' pc's / servers on the net.
The only real way to stop it is at the provider level with filtering to stop the requests before they get to the server.
