Imagine doing this from/to a boat or from  land at a target at sea. Kind of interesting, even though the weapon used is not mentioned.

Two questions: What was the range? What type of boat was the Deputy on? These two factors would determine how easy or hard the shot was. None the less it was a good shot.

Sounds like an awful lot of money was spent keeping a murderer alive.  Should have left the gun in the boat and then, for the safety of the officers, waited until he was unable to use it.
