If gear works, it works. Being concerned about looking tacticool or airsofter or Tier 1 or whatever is stupid. I was issued a bunch of LBT gear for my 3rd deployment and still used this Condor bag with a 6 mag pouch mounted to the MOLLE panel as my bail out bag. It easily held a few bottles of water, a bandoleer of ammo, two field stripped MREs, and a can of CLP inside of it and I was able to keep four loaded mags and an ICOM in the pouches mounted to the MOLLE panel. ' I bought that bag primarily because it was the only thing in store at the surplus store right before we deployed that fit the need. It held up to more than a few ground movements in RC-East and fit pretty well being between the driver and TC seats in an NTV. Condor or not, it fucking worked. Look up the reviews for load carriers and you'll see people sneering at UTG and Condor because it (gasp) costs less than a mortgage payment. When people boast about never having optics that cost less than the rifle they're missing the point that gear is supposed to make you function better; it's not meant to be a fashion statement. The best functioning weapons I've ever bought are usually the used ones with scratches and heavy holster wear that noone else wants because they weren't pretty enough. At this point in life, I try to buy gear that suits what I am going to use it for. I am not in the special forces, and I don't plan to jump out of any helicopters. I do drive a four dour sedan to work every day while wearing a suit. I choose gear that suits my situation and my AO.
The dude posted by the OP looked well suited to his environment. I'm sure he would have preferred an AK though. |

View Quote Actually, people sneer at them because they are shit, and fall apart with marginal use. In this game, you generally get what you pay for. Now, I will say that some things start getting diminishing returns depending on skill. I've got a nice piece of glass on my DM rifle. For my skill level, a $6000 optic wouldn't get me much more, while some guys can actually make that extra money work really well for them. Still, buying a $40 RDS versus an Aimpoint is a no brainer. |

In this thread we justify buying only cheap Chi-Com air-soft tac gear because of some photos, not because of how it performs or lasts.

How do you know he is a 'no nonsense' fighter off of one pic? View Quote He's got a doo rag and a fuckin' bayonet. Arrrrrgh. But seriously, I'd be willing to bet that guy would gladly take one of those $1,000 optics if he had either the means to procure one or the ability to mount it. Particularly since, like myself, he appears to have reached the age of "my eyes aren't what they used to be". |

There seems to be two things in play here.
Is good gear required? and What designates an effective fighter? I would argue that solid gear is required, and we have no idea if either of the OP's heroes are effective fighters. |

I'm confused.
Those guys are carrying around dinged-up non-camo'd POS rifles sans slings or optics because that's all they have. You can bet your ass if you said "Hey Ivan, you can have that SKS... or this KAC with an Aimpoint, DBAL, and other fancy pants gear" there's no way he'd keep the SKS. If you're saying "Tier one shit doesn't make you tier one" then... yeah, sure. That's pretty self evident. But to not have good gear, if you can easily afford it, is kind of foolish, no? |
