Title pretty much says it all.
Been unemployed for a while, so i'm gonna sell my 07 ram 1500 and use my profit to buy an older 4x4. I was thinking a mid 90s cherokee. Anything else in my price range worth a hoot? |
|
Cherocar or Toyota 4x4.
(Disclaimer, pass on the toyota if you live in the rust belt). |
|
Recently bought one of my kids a '95 Grand Cherokee 4.0L with 150k on the clock for $2700. It has the Up Country package and a very nice interior and body condition.
It only cost me about $750 to put it into very good shape for everyday use, but I am in the business of fixing cars, so YMMV |
|
I'd buy a pre-99 GM, spring for a 2500 if you can, there's a huge difference in the strength of the vehicle components.
A pre-87 would be OK, you'd get a carburetor instead of TBI. |
|
This is what I came to post. |
|
My $2200 Nissan Pathfinder is still going strong with nearly 200k.
Careful checking the frames if you live in the cancer zone. This is how mine will eventually die. The engine and trans will still be working, I am quite certain. DP |

What components are stronger? I just bought a 1997 Sierra half ton so I'm just wondering. I don't use it hard though and have only had it loaded 100% with 1,600lbs in the bed and it seem to do ok. |

Not always in the 3k range, but you can get in there every now and then, 77-79 F150. Cant beat em.
ETA: Dana 44 front 9" rear NP 435 or C6 NP205 and a motor that everyone thinks is crap, the 351/400m which is basicly a tall deck cleveland. If you are half way good with a wrench and want a truely badass rig and a future collector, check em out. Did i mention that you can drop in a 460 with minimal mods? |

88-98 chevy 1500 4x4 ext cab , I've had alot of them. I would only buy and ext cab. The pre-95 trucks are really simple with the TBI motors to work on. I get 17mpg with my current 97 chevy and the vortec 350 has good power and is still purring at 200k+. I see more of these trucks on the road than pretty much any other truck.
Parts are cheap can hold 6 people ( more than a cherokee) has a bed to haul stuff Gets around the same milage as a cherokee The engine is not shoved in with a shoe horn like a cherokee It's a pickup, = usefull |

6 cylinder Cherokee. Can't go wrong with that, as long as it's got the 4.0 liter I-6. My 98 is right at 323K right now. No oil leaks, no oil burning, minimal maintenance. LC |

Are you actually profitting from the sale of the '07 Ram? Do you really need a 4x4? Given the unemployment comment I'm just wondering if you're making the best use of the cash.

6 cylinder Cherokee. Had three of them and they are amazing. Only thing that sucks is they stopped making them in '01 and it can be hard to find one that hasn't been rode hard. |

'87-'96 Ford F-Series or Bronco. Needs no explanation. I saw an ad on c-list earlier for a beat up 88' F150 with a bunch of miles for $6k |

4.0 Jeep. From what I've seen and heard the motors are good as (last long as) honda 4cyl's.
Military surplus Blazer/Jimmy/K5's Of all the cars I've owned, my 88 GMC Jimmy 2 door, all black was the most regretted sale I've ever had. I believe the military ones have the same body style, but have the 6.2l diesel. Many of them are low mileage, and I imagine they'd last you forever. I've never seen on on the highway traveling over 60mph. 5.7 Chevy/GMC. Tahoe/Suburban, etc. Parts are common. I had a 99 Tahoe sport (also deeply regret selling it) and only issues in 160K were the brakes and fuel pump(s). |

I got 8 or less mpgs with my 460 never truly figured it out. Probably about 5 or 6 mpg. I spent $500 in fuel over two months and drove very little. |

Usually I say toyota but for that budget it will be hard to beat a 4.0 Cherokee

87 and up XJ 4.0 FTW !
You can often find them moderately tricked out for your budget. However, they can be very fickle with electrical gremlins. |

This is what I came to post. Funny, so did I. Cheap, basic, reliable transportation. |

If you know people, and are handy with tools, I would look around and buy something that runs good, but needs a little TLC.
I bought "The Battlewagon" (1983 Dodge Ramcharger), as my wife and kids call it, that I purchased for $1k. I wasn't in the market for another vehicle, but I couldn't pass this one up. It has a 360 Pursuit Motor, and beefed up 727 Torqueflight (both with about 4500 miles on them now). The interior was bad, the exterior is rough, but besides surface rust, only the typical Dodge rust in front of the rear wheels. I gutted it, coated the entire interior with Bedliner, fixed minor things, and will be painting it Desert Tan at a buddies garage this spring. After paint, welding up bumpers for it, the bedliner interior, etc, I will have about $2500 in it. |

'87-'96 Ford F-Series or Bronco. Needs no explanation. Picked up a '95 F-150 4X4 for the winter. Extended cab, 351FI, auto, manual hubs. Get's around 15mpg average. I enjoy driving it some much, that I may fix the rusted wheel wells and repaint it in the spring. You can find those trucks around here that are not beat to death for around $1000. |

80s model toyota 4runner, built solid as a brick and can be had for $3000 from what ive heard, mine was free though, inheritance

Dodge Raider 1987-90 you can find them for under 3K and if you get lucky you'll find one with a 3.0 V6 with 5 speed. They have developed quite a following and from what I see they are just about bullet proof. Most guys are SAS's the front ends and even stock they have 4.62 gear ratio and 1.9:1 transfer case. Early Ford rangers 83-97 still had that Dana 28 /35 twin I beam front axle. Pretty solid and can be had pretty cheap.

you cant go wrong with a cherokee, but dont ignore the 4.2l either, they are solid engines.
cherokees are easy to work on. grand cherokees are a pain. |
