Can someone recommend a good zombie/apocalyptic book(s)? I want one written by an intelligent and skilled writer. If the reading is complex, I'll just go slow.

John Ringo's "Black Tide Rising" series.

First book is "Under a Graveyard Sky" iirc.

Much of it is over the top. But (most of) the characters aren't stupid.

Hope you enjoy them.

Some of my favorites; Cell is actually a scary book - telepathic zombies.

https://www.amazon.com/Day-Armageddon-Origin-Exile-Books/dp/1451633033/

https://www.amazon.com/Cell-A-Novel/dp/B000EBFNCK/

And while not a novel, this is far and away the best 'zombie survival guide' I've come across - an in depth shooting manual tailored for zombies, including backyard moving targets and zombie force on force drills.

the "Home" series by A. American

the "Extinction" series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith

"The Remaining" series and the followup "Harden" series by D.J. Smith

"Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" series by WJ Lundy

I've read all of the above series in the past 2 years.  Just blazed through the WTF books here over the past few weeks.

Just started Jack Carr's "Savage Son" last night.

On the Beach and Alas Babylon are excellent post nuclear apocalypse. The Wool series by Hugh Howey is also pretty good.

For zombies I really enjoyed Keith Blackmore’s Mountain Man series and DJ Molle’s books mentioned earlier. Patrick D’Orazio’s The Dark trilogy, Brian Jarrett’s Deadlands, and Joe McKinney’s books are all decent.

I’d second Lucifer’s Hammer. It’s extremely good. Charles Sheffield’s books Aftermath and Starfire about Alpha Centauri going supernova are also good reads.

The Zombie Rules series is quite good. Not the best Z books, but they're a step above a lot of what's out there. And they're free if you have Kindle Unlimited.

I liked the "Extinction" series.

Just finished the "home" series.  It was entertaining but poorly written.

Just started the "Mountain Man" series by Keith Blackmore and holy shit is it good.

I just started the Terminal List after listening to a Joe Rogan podcast with Jack Carr on it.  I am a couple chapters in and it is pretty good.  Looking forward to the rest of the series

Arisen series is great. There’s like 13-15 main books and some stand-alones.

Ex-Heroes (Clines) and Empire (Dunwoody) are a couple of my favorite series. Zombies with a twist.

Ex-Herors is in a world with superheroes and supervillains after the zombie apocalypse.

Empire is about Death walking the Earth killing zombies as he is pissed people aren't dieing.

One of the most disturbing novels I have read is Suffer the Children (DiLouie). It was a Bram Stoker finalist the year it was published.

I also enjoyed Girl With All The Gift (Carey).

Patient Zero (Maberry) is a good action thriller with zombies as well. It's the first book in the Joe Ledger / Department of Military Sciences series.

Check out author Franklin Horton.

This dude HAS to be on arfcom.

He has 3 post-apocalyptic (grid down) series that are all set in the same universe following different protagonists.

Beats the crap out of A. American's Going Home series.

The 'Borrowed World' series was the first.
The 'Locker Nine' series is the 2nd.
The 'Mad Mick' series is a spinoff about one of the characters introduced in the earlier series.

The books are not only action packed, but thought provoking about prepping and how different people would act/react to situations.

Of all the authors in the post-apocalyptic genre (and I've read books in the genre by a lot of authors), this guy is currently my favorite.
