Israel adds ECM to the dorsal instead slapping an ALQ on the centerline. They need 3 bags to reach their enemies without tanking. Their ECM is proprietary.

The CFTs increase fuel capacity by 43 percent with very little negative effect on flight characteristics. Add three big drop tanks and total fuel capacity is more than double that of a clean F-16. Drop tank capacities are 300 (centerline) and 370 (wing) gallons per tank. Multiply by 6.9 to get capacity in pounds. An F-16's fuel capacity on internal stores is 7000 pounds.
1040 x 6.9 = 7176 pounds fuel in 3 drop tanks. That's double the range not yet counting what CFTs add. They're good for another 3050 pounds of fuel. So that's a grand total (possibly) of about 17226 pounds of fuel, more or less. The max ferry range of an F-16 is...2450 miles, so sayeth the internet, but not specifying the aircraft configuration. I would BELIEVE that a max fuel configuration (3 drop tanks plus CFTs) would be enough to fly across the US east to west. It'll have some legs. I'd love for our resident "been there done that" experts to chime in and provide helpful corrections and clarifications. |

So what is the largest external tank that an F-16 can carry? (Standard approved types, not what some desert rednecks welded together and put attachment fittings on it out of expediency)

Doubling the fuel doesn’t double the range, if it’s in external tanks. If a “clean” aircraft can carry 7000 lbs of fuel internally and can go 1000 miles, it isn’t true that adding 7000 more pounds of fuel in external tanks add another 1000 miles. Tanks add drag, so it takes more fuel to go the same distance at the same speed as a clean aircraft. Tanks do increase range, but it’s not as direct as doubling the fuel doubles the range. Also, part of the range increase usually assumes that the tanks get dropped along the way when they are empty to reduce the drag.
