I am a flight or two away from my solo. Flying in south Texas is interesting, to say its a bit windy in the spring is an understatement. Tomorrow we are supposed to do short/soft field takeoffs and landings. I texted him about tomorrow being like today and asked if we should go ahead and cancel. His response "Negative, its nice out!". Weather is 15022G28KT , runway 13. I think my instructor hates me.

since you're landing into 130 you're almost direct into the wind when landing ............ watchu worried 'bout?
you'll probably have to put flaps to zero just to reach stall speed

Thats were I learned, is Rob Whitlock still out there? I also flew out of Hunt in Portland Now that was a fun airstrip.

It's FUN to be slowly flying BACKWARDS down the runway while attempting to land! Don't you know that?

Funny, I talked to Rob a while back, he is head of the EAA group down here, but retired from training. I guess they closed up shop last year or so, a new flight school started up on the other side of the airfield. Hunt is an airport? It looks like it has been carpet bombed, but still apparently open. The runway is in really rough shape. I am flying a 172P. |

Dont worry keep training in the 172 you will be doing 90 degree crosswind and dodgeing potholes at the same time.

Aileron to hold the runway center-line. (left - right drift)
Rudder to hold the alignment of the runway. Adjust as needed. Or Crab and Kick. Airbus...."Take THAT Planet Earth!" |

After soloing, I made one of my best landings in a 20mph crosswind in a Piper Tomahawk. Trust your training.

It wasn't too bad last time, but the time before last it was blowing like this and the direction was shifting back and forth about thirty degrees. The plane was all over, I felt bad until the instructor did the "let me show you how its done" bit and got the same result.

Yeah, it seems like it's always windy in Corpus Christi. I learned to fly down there, many years ago. Have fun tomorrow!

Don't forget to add full aileron deflection after you land. That's the part I have to remind my students about the most.

The old cowboy who taught me to fly called me when Hurricane Rita was hitting the coast shortly after I started my IFR rating with my ink wet private cert. I complained about the 40kt wind and he said: "Doesn't make any sense to practice bad weather flying in good weather!" That day he established that Mother Nature always had the upper hand.
Funny thing is a few years later when I was flying around South East Alaska all I could think about is what that man taught me. Go fly, be safe and learn your limits. |

Come on out to WY. There are days when you can fly backwards.
In a Jet. fwiw, 150/22-28 isn't really a x wind landing if it's on RW 13. My internal E6b says it's maybe 5-6 knots? |
