 Fandango 1985 The mother of all road-trip movies. A group of recent college grads (Costner, Judd Nelson, Sam Robards, Chuck Bush) takes one last wild ride before succumbing to adult life and the draft, the altar, the ministry. It's a funny, yet surprisingly sincere film about that terrible moment we all face when we cross the boundary into adulthood. Good Costner movies are rare; this is one of his best. Nate Grover |

True Romance Was a sleeper, as was RD... until Pulp Fiction came out.
Fear & loathing is anything but a sleeper, but Bill Murray's WTBR (which was actually more than one of Thomson's incoherent war stories) certainly was. As for some of my sleepers (sorry, I never have single favorites: Angelheart Bad Lieutennant Barfly Stalingrad (from the maker of Das Boot. It's what Enemy of the Gates tried so desperately to be but failed, only from the German's side) |

Both "Savior" and "Boondock Saints" were sleepers for me. I had never heard of either until introduced to them by a friend - we seemed to have similar taste in films and introduced each other to quite a few.
Still, the first film that came to mind when I read the thread title was "Ghost and the Darkness." I was with another friend and went to a local dollar theater to catch some other movie that for some reason we didn't end up seeing (either wouldn't start for an hour, sold out - can't really remember). Neither of us had heard of it, and we figured we couldn't go wrong for a buck. That movie was so "un-Hollywood" - from the excellent gun handling to the very un-PC (and very realistic) portrayals of both the village in general and the key characters. I still can't believe Hollywood made a movie with a Colonial Empire as the backdrop and never tried to play up any leftist political angles. The dialogue was refreshing and "real" and the characters were equally believable. Best deal I ever got in a theater. |

For a sleeper western I always thought "Wild Bill" was a decent movie. Portrayed the dark side a legend.
