Set up is:
HDMI from DVR to TV.
HDMI from PS3 to TV.
Optical from TV to soundbar receiver.
Is that the setup that's giving you trouble, or is that the setup that's OK? Which connection was giving you trouble? Was it PS3 and/or DVR ––HDMI––-> receiver ––HDMI––-> TV? If so, then it would definitely implicate your receiver as the issue. I'm also confused about the replacement receiver; is that still giving you trouble in the configuration you originally used?
All of my components hook into my Onkyo via HDMI (the DVD player via component), and there's a single HDMI cable from the receiver to my TV. The receiver does video upconversion and HDMI switching. If I had similar issues then my first check would be:
1) See if the issue occurs only from a single input.
2) If not, then the A/V receiver is like an issue. Go to step 2a just to be sure.
2a) Next step would be to connect a component directly to the TV and see if the issue goes away to confirm it's the receiver.
2b) If it still does it, it could be the TV's HDMI input. switch the component to another HDMI input.
3) If it's a single component, swap the HDMI cable as a first step.
4) If it persists, connect it directly to the TV to see if it still acts up. If so, connect it to another HDMI input on the TV.
Optical audio is so last year.
