Whats interesting abiut Joh Newton is how famous a sinner he was in his life. Of him it was said "He had the reputation of being able to curse for two hours without repeating himself"
He was a Naval deserter. His motivation? "Wild and dissolute, he deserted from the British navy and ran away to Africa in order, as he put it in his memoirs, "that I might sin my fill." He deserted so he can sin his fill.
It is no wonder that John Newton was a great preacher of grace. He had learned that where sin abounded grace did much more abound: grace overflowed: grace was infinite. And he had become the astounding example of the fact that grace is not withheld because of sin.
When he died, Newton left behind the epitaph that remains today on his gravestone.
"John Newton, clerk, once an infidel and libertine, a servant of slaves in Africa, was, by the rich mercy of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the faith he had long laboured to destroy."
