I'm in the market for a beater pickup and have started looking at 1980s era fullsize pickups. If I'm going fullsize I'm going V8, but I don't know who made the most reliable ones, Ford, Dodge, or Chevy. I had a 1987 Ramcharger that ran great for me but I need the open bed now.

What would ya'll suggest?

as far as 80's trucks go, I notice mostly chevys, up here in wisconsin, but 1980's vehicles are rare up here anymore.

I prefer the 87' Chevys as they were the old body style but had Throttle body fuel injection.

4x4 Chevy's.

DO NOT GET THE 305!!!!

Same shitty mileage as the 350, but less power.

I guess it is reliable, though.

Wizzo I wonder if the 80's 305's are short on power, my dad's late 90's 305 can ALMOST squeal the tires.

For what it's all worth:

My dad once had a '88 Chevy 1 ton 2WD, with a 350 and a 3/4 speed manual.  He used it as a work vehicle with a utillity box on back.  Had very little problem out of it, till it got stolen.

Fuel injection helped them a little, but that didn't come along until I was a year old (1987).

The ones before that had carbs on them and sucked for power. I have one lying around our farm that I pulled out of my Blazer when I threw the 350 in it. There is no way you could get me to put it back in there.

+1, BTDT.

FWIW I have had better luck with 80's GM trucks than the others, YMMV.
