Can you do your own car work? If so, I'd pick the Corvette. I maintain three 2000 Vettes (two for relatives and one for work), and they are a pain to keep running. There's a tremendous number of small problems like with the transfer pump, the steering column locking-up, with loose seats, major headlight problems (replaced the wiring on three headlights just this weekend after the insulation rubbed off from the movement of the lights), constant problems with the crap Bose stereo, pieces of the interior that just fall apart, false car alarms, etc.. There hasn't been any major problems like with the engine or transmission yet, but they are still big enough things to be annoying. You will either have to do work yourself or find a mechanic that you trust with the car that doesn't charge an arm and a leg. That's an impossible thing to find around here.
If you don't do your own work, then I suggest the new Mustang. A new car with a warranty is a very nice thing. The Corvette is the better car in every way, but I just couldn't recommend a used American car. Those three Corvettes have constant problems.z |

I can not stand people who think the only time that nice cars were made in the 60's. Its probably the time you grew up in. Get into the 2000's. these are the cars that are going to be ingrained into this gernerations memories. |

Nope, born in the early 80s. I just think the current mustangs are fucking ugly. They may perform well, but I think they look like shit. Same for the GTO. And the new stuff from Dodge. He didn't ask about it, but my choice in cars would be a '91 or '92 Camaro with some work done to it, or something new but not US designed. Nissan 350Z, for example, or a late 90s/early 00s BMW M3 (should be able to find one under 35k. So get off your high horse. Not everyone who likes classic cars thinks that they're the ONLY nice cars out there. Some of us just think that most of what GM/Ford/Dodge is producing now looks like crap. Whats going to be ingrained in "this generation's" memories are going to be shitty little honda civics with wings, and other ricemobiles. Not american cars unless the designers can pull their heads out of their asses. |

I purchased a new '94 and a new '96 with no problems at all - (unless you count the rear tires wearing out very quickly - )The 350 engines are bulletproof (figuratively speaking of course). |

Corvette. The others have a huge weight disadvantage. You can get a decent low mileage Z06 for that kind of cash.

The one that comes with the best warranty. So that if there is a problem, someone else will fix it and foot the bill. I REALLY like the mustangs though.

I was born in the mid 80's. If I wanted a real nice car i would go for a BMW Z3 or Z4. I just like all american muscle, like the Mustang fastback, Charger, GTO, Talledaga, and so on....

I was also born in the mid-80's. I'd go with the GTO. It's very nice inside, and it has the LS2(in the 2005/2006) or the LS1(in the 2004). It's about $33K new, or you could buy a used one for $25K since the first year didn't exactly sell well. The Vette is too expensive. The Mustang=well it has less HP than both of the above. I like the Mustang but given the Choice I'd get the GTO.

A good friend of mine at work just bought a '05 GTO last month for $28.5+tt&l
400hp & 400ft-lbs 6.0L LS2, bang for the buck it's hard to beat that thing C6 powertrain, IRS & nice big brakes, can haul 4people if need be looks boring(but sounds great) has a SMALL trunk & small gas tank, fit & finish is better than many current GM products, oh the 4spd auto is a basicly as quick as the 6spd Tremec BUT a $1200 gas guzzler tax is part of the price with the auto could use some bigger OEM tires It really HAULS ASS !!! Either of the GM cars. If you want a warrenty, the GTO all the way. The LS2 in stock form will rape nearly anything on the road, modded ones aside. If you can settle for no warrenty, a Z06 Corvette would be the best bet. Awesome handling, tons of power, and the ability to mod it as much as you want. The Mustang is still a joke in stock form, it can't hold its own against GMs muscle.

Don't get the Mustang. You'll kick yourself two years from now when you pull up to a stoplight next to two other Convertable V6 Mustangs exactly like yours but a different color, both with a highschool chick behind the wheel.
The Mustang convertable is the girliest car ever made next to a Mazda Miata, Mitsubishi Eclipse or Honda Civic Del Sol. That's fact... no disputing. |

Not a thing wrong with that. Go fast, keep a low profile. I am thinking about one myself and I would NEVER consider a Pontiac anything. I think these are sleepers that will be highly sought after in a few years when they get discontinued, rather like the Impala SS. |

I drove one of those and while stepping on the accelerator was surprising, it didn't impress me like some other cars have. Neither did the $45k price tag after dealer markup, excluding the 20" rims it had on it. Welcome to California. I don't think I could own a Dodge either. I agree that the GTO has this heritage and some of the cars you see driving around and on the dealer lots now will be the same ones 10-15 years from now people will view the same way we view 69 Camaro's/Mustangs; we snap our necks. I heard today that a version of the Skyline will come in 2007 and the Supra and Camaro will be coming back. Why does car shopping have to be so hard?

Yea got it, same week austitic kid on a bike hits druver side door. Later on Excursion into passenger side, then tree limbs get it during ice storm. Get it fixed and painted, same week, car wreck, 2 weeks later, another car wreck, fix it, hit a deer. Currently fixing again |

Oh geeze, I thought you were saying you had mechanical problems... I was going to say... that's ridiculous.
I've got a '94 Fleetwood Brougham and I wouldn't trade it for anything new made that wasn't more than $25,000... no joke. The quickest, most comfortable car, most reliable and most roomy car I've ever owned bar none. The '97 Saturn was as reliable, but the Fleetwood has 149,000 miles on it and I haven't had it as long as I had the Saturn. Best part is the 24MPG I get when I'm not beating on it or going faster than 75-80MPH. Yeah... I once got 26MPG in the longest car since the '70s, weighing in at over 4500lbs. There's no other luxury car I'd reccomend used other than an LT1 B-Body (or D-body in my case). I have maybe $300 in go-fast parts and it runs low, low 15's... optioned out the ass, and cost me a mere $2300+tax. Don't sell your B-Body, just blame your driving, and the kid on the bike, the deer, the Excursion driver, and the wind.

Corvette is nice but I would prefer something new to a used vette.
The mustang looks awesome, I am waiting for a factory stang with a lot of power and a good factory warranty at a decent price. The gto is ugly but for what I need to do I don't care about that very much. Having the rear wheel drive and a stick shift and that much power from the factory sounds great. I would have some cheap rims and some excellant snow tires so I could drive the thing year round out here where we get some snow and what not but nothing too serious. The fact it blends in so well makes me like it more. I did some reading on why the gto weighs so much the other day and basically holden built it pretty stout to survive their rough roads in austrailia and that means to me the car should hold up pretty well as far as rattles and shakes are concerned. I also like that the gto has been out for a bit and the reports are not terrible from what I am seeing. |

I have. It's a hundred bucks over my Firebird. I've heard the Stangs are hard on insurance rates besides, why even ask this question? For 35K you buy can a far better car in used Z06. More HP, more torque, better mileage, faster, quicker, cheaper insurance, and a better head turner. What's not to like?

They are in a WHOLE other league compared to a GTO or a Stang. I've tried the Mustang, Z28 & Trans Am route. None compare to the Corvette. Even the BMW's I've owned, while great cars, don't give you the same feeling. Also, just from a prestige aspect, if that matters to you, no comparison. A Corvette is known as a $50k car, even if it's a generation old and worth a fraction of that. With a Mustang, even the best model is ranked with the lowest in most people's eyes. You'll have folks claiming that Jim's 6 banger is the "same" as your Cobra R.
