After watching the episode of full custom garage where he built a trike using the engine from a GL1000 I have the bug.
I plan on using a gl1200 for the front suspension,engine, trans and most of the frame. I'd rather not use a rear axle like a ford 9" as reverse will be me so I want to make it as light as possible. Any suggestions for a rear axle that is reliable and will be easy to narrow and is 5 lug with disc brakes? Something with an aluminum center section and an after market following would be ideal.  This is Ian's build.

Dana 35 or 44 will be common, cheap, and supported available with 5 lug disc brakes.
May be cheaper to see if can't use the starter as reverse like the GL1600 does. I am not sure it can be retrofit into the older GL1000/1200 engines though. |

8.8 out of an Explorer. Believe they were aluminum center sections in the Monteros .

Yes you really want to have reverse on a trike. And I can say from experience that a mechanical revers is way better than an electric reverse. The Honda Goldwing GL 1600 and Harley Tri-Glide both have electrical reverse.
