Dana 35 or 44 will be common, cheap, and supported available with 5 lug disc brakes.

May be cheaper to see if can't use the starter as reverse like the GL1600 does. I am not sure it can be retrofit into the older GL1000/1200 engines though.

Yes you really want to have reverse on a trike. And I can say from experience that a mechanical revers is way better than an electric reverse. The Honda Goldwing GL 1600 and Harley Tri-Glide both have electrical reverse.

The mechanical reverse kits are an aftermarket part for HD transmissions. They basically replace the cover with a lever and gears. The kits are a bit pricey but they will last longer than using the starter or other electrical means.

Here is one example of a mechanical reverse https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/motor-trike-reverse-gear-kit-for-harley-touring

If I would have kept my HD Tri-Glide, Would have installed one of these reverse kits. The electrical reverse is hard on the electrical system and battery.

The only aluminum center sections I know of were used in the IRS Cobras and the Mk8 Lincolns.
