So, after some maintenance and work on my KLR I am now looking into getting a new rear tire since mine is worn and nearing end of life.

I won't lie to myself or you guys, I don't do much off road yet, but I would like something that is quite capable for when I do go off road.

That said I can't spend $200 on a k60 scout. So, what is a good budget friendly rear tire that is close to a 50/50?

I was looking at the mefo explorer or a mitas E07 and figured that tread like those is good for me.

Many like the Dunlop D606, but that is too much aggression for how much I ride on the roads and I would like something with a good amount of expected life.

Shinko 705. I run them on my KLR. You can usually get a full set for around $150.

I ran quite a few tires on the dr650 I had. D606s lasted almost as long as the more street oriented tires and wdre such better off road.

Another Shinko 705 owner here, running a 130/90-17 on my 08 KLR. I don't do any serious dirt stuff beyond gravel service roads in the National Forest.

I don't have a dual sport but I do run a Shinko on the rear of my bike and it has been the best cheap tire I have ever had.

Has anyone mentioned the Shinko 705? That's what I am running for a more road oriented tire.

I stopped using Shinko 705s, I lost tread on two of them (buy a couple at a time), they weren't old or high mile.

Switched to D606s............of course I have lost a knob or two from the 606s. On the freeway at 75mph I would rather lose a knob than a section of tread.

I commute on 606s so a lot of road miles, they are amazingly good on blacktop. I get about 3500-4000 miles out of them.

Can you explain more on your failures?? How recent was this?

I am interested to hear as well. I haven't heard of any failures before. Did you say the span of purchase was far apart so no chance of a bad batch?

For true dual sports with lugs I have had good experience with TKC 80's but I have heard positive things about the 606's.

It's all I run. Three sets on my old 06 KLR and will replace the OEM's on my 2017 KLR when needed. They are more of a 80/20 tire but work well for forest service roads and such...KLR's really don't belong in the mud and sand and these tires would be equally out of place there.

Plus, they are good and sticky on the road.

Dang, I was going to pop in here and mention the K60 Scout.

LOTS of the Super Tenere guys love them. And plenty of those guys get good mileage out of them. Like, 15,000-20,000 miles. Which is nothing short of fucking ridiculous for a motorcycle tire. If those rumors are true, then it may be signficantly cheaper, long-term, to buy the far more expensive tire...

Did a little searching for Shinko 705 problems at lunch. From what I can find, folks had some issues pre-radial days (2009-). There far more reviews on how good they are.

I run the Full Bore m40/m41 on my Tiger 800. Same pattern, deeper tread, a little cheaper.

Great tires.

I'm running Mitas 07's on my gs and love them. Great on and off road. Have 6K on them with very little wear. Were a bitch to intall, very stiff sidewalls.

I've got two sets of wheels, with the K60's on one set and Pirelli XCMHs on the other and I swap back and forth as needed. I've got roughly about 5k on the K60's and I'd say that they are maybe halfway worn while riding 50/50.

I push them hard, especially on road.

Normally I'd still suggest the D606, but I have almost double the mileage I get out of the 606 on a Pirelli MT-21 rear...on a bike twice as powerful. I'm impressed with it and will replace them with the same when they're gone.

I've had two sets of Shinkos. They don't seem to last as long as the Pirellis but they are cheap and do their job.

Guys seem to love them, but they were the absolute worst DS tire experience I've ever had. Chunked down to the cords in 3-4 different places on the rear in less than 2300 miles. On a light bike none the less.

Ok, a little bit of an update, I currently have a shinko 705 on my rear, and while I like its road manners, it's pretty bad for what I used it for the other day.

There is a gravel/dirt road that leads to my local shooting range and trails that I take frequently. Well it rained the other day and the road was pretty muddy, and the 705 was terrible in the slick mud, so I would like something a little more aggressive.

I am actually thinking about putting a d606 on the rear and seeing how it goes, but I don't want a tire that will chunk or wear super fast on the road.

I may spend 80% or more of my time on the road, but I want a tire that performs well off-road.

The D606 will serve you well. I've never had one chunk even with lots of highway miles. They'll last 2500-3000 miles under normal conditions and not spinning the rear a ton in the dirt. I ride about the same now (80% Street) with where I live and they've served me well. Still unsure if I'm going with the D606 or another MT21 once this rear is toast.

I run Trail Wings on my DL650. They are expensive but hold up very well. Got 10000 miles out of the rear, changed out the front at 12000. Front still looked ok when changed out, but didn't want to risk taking it on my vacation next week.

I've run Scorpions on the front since day one, great stick when you get in over your head. Ran a few sets of stinko's on the rear, they were OK but they didn't last very long. Been running Metzeler Tourance's on the rear last two sets and like them a lot.

E07's a great rear tire....lasts forever, good traction in everything but super deep mud. Pricey, but you get a long life out of them.

The Shinko 805 is a great rear, too, very affordable. I just got back from running the GDR on my Strom with an 804/805. Great performance in all the conditions i encountered, which was everything from silt & slop to wet rocks and twisties.

705's not bad, but it's a mostly street tire.
