Change the oil.
Nothing fancy, Castrol 10W40 is fine. BTDT |

I agree with the oil change. Thumper like that beats up oil rather quickly.
I'd say Rotella 15w40 |

If changing the oil doesn't do it I suggest a clutch soak. That involves pulling the clutch discs and soaking them in oil.
What happens is the discs are dry and grab and drag. Makes for a horrible shift. Make very sure you don't use "energy conserving" oil. Use a oil rated for motorcycles. |

Most oils aren't EC rated. Those that are, are not wet clutch friendly. |

Rotella T6 synthetic. MC rated and cheap to boot.

did anyone mention oil?
Hard shifting is a sure sign to either change the oil, or add more. Or your shift drum is about to blow up (which is pretty hard to do) |

I agree about Rotella synthetic oil, but it also could be a loose or worn out shifter.

oil chance, make sure the clutch is GTG and be sure you're dropped the revs a bit when you shift.

Are you sure your clutch isn't out of adjustment? A different oil can certainly smooth things out, but I don't think it should be "hard" to shift gears regardless of what oil you are using. That's the first place I would check if I were you.

That's the first place I would check if I were you. too thick of an oil will make the bike harder to start, too thin of and oil will make is shift "clunky" or hard. IMHO, high dollar oil is a gimmick. Choose the correct oil for the temperature you operate at. Example, I ran either Rotella or Delo 15w-40 in big rigs. Would go 30,000 - 38,000 miles between changes. NEVER had an oil related failure. In all my bikes (I-4s, thumpers, and twins) I ran/run Rotella. I change it around 3500-4500 miles (road bikes) the thumper gets new oil every 2000 miles (lots dirt and dust). NEVER had any adverse issues. That said, you could run NAPA brand oil, change often and never have an problems. maybe this will help

Well, this morning I adjusted the clutch cable and changed the oil using Amsoil 10w 40 motorcycle and suited up and went for a ride.
I am very pleased with the shifting now, smooth, like butter. Thanks for the help. |
