Was at a truck stop the other day and I came across blocks of green and brown polishing compound for chrome. Is these the same compounds used for stropping? I'm asking because $10 for a brick sized block seems like a good deal.

Depending on the actual grit, they should work just fine.

Since you're not trying to put a shine on something, these types of compounds will work well for sharpening.
There are specific compounds for barber's strops but I saw little real difference between them and ordinary jeweler's polishing compounds.

Yup. It's a rouge block.

I can't remember which one's finer...I think green.
