However, I wasn't sure where else to go.
Most martial arts do not train for survival, the effects of adrenaline into account - their training is for sport. So, I do not want to post on a forum of theirs. My hope is that there are gents here who are well versed in the area, and have also taken self-defense (hand combat). My result is this: I have played around a bit with a friend, no striking - pull your punches before you make contact. After this, I had a hard time making contact in boxing! When I start 'seriously' training Krav Maga: I will not be doing it in a class room, there are none in my entire state. My plan is to learn from a book, and have our work 'checked' by someone who does know it well. (I am moderately well-versed in how to train, I have read a book by Siddle and another by Grossman.) Now, how do I train to make contact, without actually harming my training partner? Especially considering that this skill 'plays dirty?' Thanks. |

Look down the training page... they have an unarmed forum... But to answer your question?- Go to a KM class...a book isn't good to learn from... Or take some Muay Thai–– and hell, if you have someone who will 'check' and make sure you're doing it fine, why aren't they teaching a class? It's so Or learn boxing, not "I have some gloves and box with my friends a bit"... Learn to Launch straight 1,2's down the pipe and call it a day...If you really trained boxing bud, you'd realize that KM isnt needed. Better clinch work is. Pulling your punches? Seriously, u scared of getting hit... yet you say you're a boxer? Get some 'training' MMA gloves with the extra padding––- keep your baby face. Regards, D. Ehrhardt- low-level pro. boxer... |

Maybe someone useful will come along, the only help you have been is telling me that I posted in the wrong forum. I will move my post now.
Maybe you didn't read where I said there is no KM in my entire state. Or that KM fights dirty, i.e. eye gouging.. You want me to do that with my partner to show we're 'not wimps?' |

I did read that there were none in your state––- YET you stated, " My plan is to learn from a book, and have our work 'checked' by someone who does know it well." Well, why not have them teach you the proper way in the first place?... =========== First bud, I am helpful. I promise you. But your post exudes "16y/o wanna-be special forces ninja who just read Rainbow 6 and Splinter Cell". Secondly, I've taught Self-defense and coached Boxing in some ~rough~ parts of detroit, I regularly hold classes for Corrections officers as well. From all of this I've learned one thing. "If it's one on one- The one who can control a clinch and throw 1-2's down the pipe will win." Secondly, why are you so caught up on taking KM? Have you considered Muay Thai? Now, the influx of douche-bags from the UFC/Ultimate Fighter Fanbase has made the 'sport' a little annoying, but damn, if you find a good group of dedicated MT guys, you'll learn decent boxing, Great clinch work, and Ridiculous knees. Mix in a minor bit of wrestling/Sub-grappling for takedown defense and getting to your feet and there is no better Unarmed self defense... Just never forget that you can Knee the b'jesus out of the groin and headbutt... Third, you're worried about 'making contact' with your bud and hurting e/o––> Then don't Eye-gouge... anything else can be taken care-of with a good partner and Pads... Worried about groin strikes?––- get some Thai pads and practice a 1-2-clinch-knee combo... The KM class I stopped in on over the years was a rough and tumble class, with weekly 'mma' style sparring... Full contact and all... It was actually not your standard McDojo exploitation of KM that seems to be preveilant Full contact (or moderate would be more appropriate) sparring as a regular part of a class will actually get and keep you prepared to use the skills you learned... just something to consider... Self-defense is something you can 'learn' from a book, but sure as hell not something you'll ever get good at from a book. If you think the monthly training session with a bud is sufficient, you're fooling yourself, and potentially going to get hurt with false-bravado. It takes lots and lots of work to learn to defend yourself effectively. Blood, sweat and tears inbound. So, continue to think I'm a dick; but don't assume it's because I'm looking down on you with disdain. |
