I'm just getting into IDPA, and I'm wondering what I should be using for a holster.  I carry with a G19 in my Crossbreed Supertuck, would this work?

I see/hear a lot of people using OWB holsters, but would an IWB be ok for IDPA, and an intro class at that?

If not, what should I be using for an OWB holster?  I have an Uncle Mikes basic kydex one, but I have issues with retention on it.

You can use a Supertuck for IDPA and an intro class.
It would work.
Would this be the best choice in my opinion? No way.

If you do, be very careful when you reholster and TAKE YOUR TIME.
Keep your finger off the trigger and reholster s-l-o-w-l-y.

With an IWB holster it is far too easy to inadvertently point the gun at yourself. I've seen new shooters do this and it can be scary if they don't have good trigger finger discipline.

Make IDPA and your classes easier on yourself and use a OWB holster.
Especially in a class when you'll be reholstering 100's of times.

And good for you for getting into IDPA and taking classes!

What would be a good cheap (under $40) OWB holster?

My Uncle Mikes has been anything but satisfactory.

A Fobus paddle style holster would be fine for what you're doing.
They don't cost much and work great.
Here's one at Brownells.

I use a Blackhawk Serpa.

Good on you for giving IDPA a try. If you decide you like it, learn to be accurate before you try to get fast.

Remember -
You can't miss fast enough to win.

A good OWB holster is a good idea for classes and high round count practice sessions.  Putting a red-hot shooting iron right next to your skin with only a thin piece of leather as the buffer is not very fun, trust me.

I highly recommend anything by comp-tac.  Especially either the locking paddle or the belt holster.  Great stuff, made by people who are active competitors.

I'm gonna go against the grain and say take the intro class with your Supertuck. If that is what you carry for CCW and it's a good quality holster (which it is) then use it. Later on, if you want to pickup a faster, gamier holster then look at Comtac, Bladeteck and other quality kydex OWB holsters.

As others have said, be safe with it (goes for any type of holster) and start out slow.

You'll be fine with it. Just take extra care when reholstering that your shirt doesn't get caught in the trigger guard. If you decide the IDPA is for you, and you want to be competitive, then a good OWB holster is a good idea.

I've been competing in IDPA for close to 4 months now, along with weekly IDPA practices, and I've been running a Crossbreed this entire time. I've had zero issues, and have remained competitive. I can draw almost as quickly as if I were running an OWB at 3 o'clock and a jacket type cover garment, as opposed to my t-shirt and IWB 4 o'clock. Is it the fastest? No, but as much as I like the gaming aspect of IDPA, I'd like to practice with my carry gear as well.
For what it's worth, I was 10 seconds off Expert on my first IDPA classifier, and that was entirely due to poor accuracy in stage 3, not speed.

use what you use when you carry, this is the way that i do it, no matter if i am doing a match, a training course, or a practice session. I carry an xd in a super tuck, therefore that is what i use when i shoot. However i am also not one of those folks that "game" competition, i use it for what it is, and i do not go to win a match. alot of folks do things, and cut corners that allow them to score good or win, but they are things that will get them killed in the real world. I use it as a training opportunity and i address stages and or targets like i would in a fight.

I feel you should train the way you plan to fight.....

i took my first into class last thursday, and drew from my supertuck.  i did this specifically because this is the way i carry, and as far as i can remember this was the first time ive fired my pistol from draw.  didnt move it around to 3oclock like the other shooters did, so i could specifically get practice from my actual carry position.

i say try it.

now if i ever get into more advanced classes, ill probably switch to something OWB.
