You can use basically any holster that doesn't position the holster away from your body or drop it down too much.

From the rule book:

-May not position the firearm where the breech face (autos)
or rear of the cylinder (revolvers) is below the center of the
belt. NO drop loops are permitted.
-Can have no offset backpieces and/or belt slots. The holster
may not offset away from the belt and/or body. No gap is
permitted in the following areas:
1. From the body to the inside of the belt.
2. From the outside of the belt to the inside of the
backpiece and/or backside of the holster.
3. From the outside of the backpiece to the inside of
the holster.
If you look through the belt slot area of the holster with it on
the belt/body, you should not be able to see any daylight. If
you can see through this belt tunnel area, the holster is not
approved.

Most guys go with kydex holsters simply because they are more consistent and faster from the draw.  Some of the good holsters are Bladetech's SRB and Comp-Tac.  One good way to go is to just buy the IDPA pack from Bladetech.  It will come with a IDPA legal holster and magazine carrier.

The idea behind IDPA isn't to make you go out and buy new equipment to compete with.  They want you to compete with what you've got.  That being said, go to a few matches and try what you've got.  If it doesn't work quite like you want, try something else.

Like I said in your other thread, Dave Sevigny won his first IDPA state championship with the Glock 23 he carried in an inside the waistband holster.  It is the singer not the song.

Use the holster that you CC with, IDPA is a good opportunity to practice with it.

If you want a holster for competition try asking around at a match.  Chances are someone has the same gun you do and will be willing to bring an extra holster to the next match for you to try out.

I'm a fan of pancake holsters and after playing with a number of different holsters, pancake's are my personal choice.
