Grip with thumb outside
curious, is this a better way to grip an AR styled rifle? Thumb is not wrapped around the grip but placed on the side. Anyone else shoot like this?

I shoot that way in air rifle field target, but not in any high power sports.

The trigger disturbance on airguns is very sensitive and those triggers are way lower than service rifle.

That man hasn't been trained in proper handling control, looks like he made that up to look tacticool.
The AR platform has a tendency to twist, compared to a bolt gun when shooting, so full grip is wanted.

Scott didn't make this up to look "tacticool", as the Chief Instructor at the Sig Sauer Academy he's put hundreds of thousands of rounds down range.   Not a weekend warrior type of guy.

I've seen quite a few shooters here shoot that way too. Mostly shooters with bolt guns. I tried it and it felt awkward with my service rifle. Did not feel in control, especially in standing. I was just curious. First time I observed this was a guy shooting a carbine rapid fire and dumped his hot brass on me while i was in prone on a public range. I thought that grip allowed him to shoot faster - but I wasn't sure if he hit the targets.  He did get scoldings from the RO though

Doubt he would have run the gun this way for off hand shooting, but I can see using this method from the bench.

From the bench, the prefered method is to "pinch" the trigger, not quite the same.
