the other day i went to the range to practice with the Garand and using the proper sling techniques. at 100 yards in the sitting position i had about a 3" group with 8 shots. is this something that should be improved or is this pretty good? i still need to buy some of them targets for simulated distances.im just curious if what i was shooting was good, bad, or just plane ugly

Three things affect your shooting performance: 1) your rifle, 2) your ammo, and 3) most importantly, YOU.
You have to know how good each item is. #1 and #2 have to be better than #3. When you overtake the performance of your rifle or ammo, it's time to upgrade.

Based on your eight round test, you know what the triad will do. Now, shoot the same ammo and high performance ammo from prone (or benched) and determine which performs better (rifle/ammo/you).
Welcome to the never ending pursuit of excellence.

The above advice is sound. Check to see if the rig likes your ammo as an independent variable by using a bench rest.

Here are the target dimensions for the SR-1. You can infer the score from the ring size. If it were me, I would want a rig that were x-ring capable from a rest for any 10 shot string fired from the magazines.

Target Dimensions for SR-1

As you can see, the x-ring is 1.35" diameter at 100 yards, and the 10-ring is 3.35" diameter.

Edit, the SR-21 simulates the 300 yard line and the x-ring and 10-ring is even smaller.

Your 3" group will get you into the game, but you would find yourself wanting a little tighter group as time goes on.

I would say you have a fair starting point to start, but if you want to get to HM scores, you will want to dial that rig in a little tighter as time goes on. For now, jump into the game.
