I decided I want to get into competitive shooting and started looking into the different types of events.  I don't want to do something really expensive, like F class.  So naturally, I lean more toward a service rifle type of event.

Then I realize there is the Distinguished Rifleman Badge.  This appeals to me, since I can wear it on my class A uniform and it would look good for my career when it's an enjoyable hobby too.  Don't get me wrong, I realize it could take a very long time to earn it.  I have no illusions about that.

I think I read somewhere that as a service member, there are different rules about how I can earn points towards it.  Like only certain events count?  If someone can clarify this, I would really appreciate it.  I'm also trying to figure out exactly what are the limitations on the types of parts / features that are allowed on a "service rifle."

Army: AR350-66

Not sure about the other services.

For civilian EIC matches, the rifle must be either an M1, M14, or AR15 with the external appearance of the issued rifle.  Allowable calibers are 30'06 or .308 for the M1, .308 for the M14, or .223 for the AR.  Presuming you'd want to use the AR, the rifle needs to look like a standard A2 or A4 with the carry handle rear sight.  The sight can have a hood.  The trigger can be a match 2-stage.  Fancy charging handles, ambi-anything, and "BUIS" are illegal.

It needs to look something like this.

The "President's 100" is another award to pursue.  You can wear that one too.

Thanks for the info, jcs1.  I find it odd that the rule book goes into detail about modifications on pistols, but not service rifles.  What about lead weights in the buttstock or under the handguard?

Sir, the "no external mods" rule has some limitations, a few come to mind with the AR service rifle.  First, it is not uncommon for a service rifle used in competition to have a "float tube".  The modifications required to fit a float tube onto a service rifle requires the removal of the standard front sling mount and fitting the mount at the forward end of the tube.  The gap between the two surfaces could be considered and external mod as is the space around the barrel to the rear of the front sight base.  Additionally it is common for a service rifle to have opposing set screws in the front sight base to allow for lateral adjustment of the front sight.  Both of these mods are external mods but are completely legal for service rifle competition.  Just a few examples.  HTH, and good luck with your quest from one DR to a contender.  7zero1 out.

I tried sending a PM, but your inbox is full.  I sent an email instead.  Hopefully it's an address you still use?

For all I know, you could have responded by now.  I haven't been able to check my email since this morning.
