Started shooting high power this year and found that prone kills the skin on my elbows. My elbows are pretty dry anyway, but prone was tearing them up - friction burns and cracking skin from rubbing  inside my elbow pads  - until I found a solution that worked so good I thought I would share it.

There is a company called Mueller Sport Care and they make a product called "Pro Strips" elbow protection. It is a self-adhesive mesh fabric strip that covers the elbow. NFL players wear them to protect against turf burn when they go sliding on the artificial fields. I kept my elbows in fine shape thoughout some long matches. The strips are 4"x8" and I find that I can cut them in half for my needs. They sure worked great for me - if your elbows bother you shootin prone, you might give these a try.

I just use a pair of USGI elbow pads.

Thanks for the tip.

I shoot with no elbow pads.  My elbows are still scabbed from a match 2 weeks ago.  I hate to think what some people must think when they see what looks like rug burn on my elbows.

I also use a pair of elbow pads, hooded sweatshirt, and my Creedmoor coat. It still tears up the skin on my elbows from the fabric rubbing against the skin. These pro strips stop that abrasion.

I may give it a try.  I shoot with a jacket and long sleeves, with a mat on either grass, dirt, or cement.  Sometimes my elbows get torn up, especially when shooting on a hard surface.  I tried elbow pads, but didn't like it with my shooting jacket.  Thanks for the tip.

Purpose designed shooting sweater that you use underneath a shooting jacket, has elbow protection sewn in. They are also cooler than a sweatshirt.

I pair of cheap elbow pads ($10 or so) from the local sporting goods store works just great for me, even on concrete.

The pads have to be against my skin.  If I put them on over a shirt (long underwear or long sleeved t-shirt) the sliding around between the cloth and my skin just eats up the skind on my elbows.  It gets so raw so quick it's painful to keep shooting after 30 or 40 rounds.

I don't like or wear a shooting jacket (sweat just fine in a t-shirt, let alone with a jacket on me) so the elbow pads really help.

How do you tolerate a sling on your arm without a jacket? I personally would not shoot HP without a jacket of some kind. Even one of the USMC cloth jackets would make it bearable. Otherwise it's too painful.

I wear a sweatshirt myself, doesn't seem too bad.  I can feel my heart beat though.

It may be that you are up on the point of your elbow, rather than the flat above your elbow. Like another poster said, I don't see how you can stand the sling without a coat. Even an inexpensive cloth coat will help with that, and the elbow thing.
