On Sunday our club had a CMP style service rifle match.  We shot on various sized targets at 200 yards (the limit of our range).

We shot 20 prone slow, 10 prone fast, 10 sitting fast, and 10 standing slow.  My understanding was that it was a standard CMP course of fire... but I wouldn't know if it wasn't.

It was my first rifle match of any kind I have shot in.  Had a great time.  I was shooting a RRA Standard A2 with GI nylon sling and PMC ammo.  Shot a 393.  Thought it was an awful lot of fun.  I definitely want to do it again next time in September.  I think I will put a leather sling on the gun and plan to have RRA put a NM freefloat tube on the rifle.  Then maybe load up some good Sierra bullets.  Hopefully can do a bit better next time.

Wish I would have tried this 20 years ago.

Congrats!

Don't worry about the 20 years. We never know how many orbits around the sun we get.
Glad you discovered this and hope you keep it up.

It is good fun, isn't it?  My AR (1/8 twist, wylde chamber) likes the sierra 69s.

Don't worry too much about scores.  Just look for things to practice and improve and your scores will take care of themselves.  Regular dryfire practice is the fastest way to improve your scores.

Sir, well actually I did try this twenty years ago!  At that time I'd already been shooting HP for almost ten years.  There are some of us that have been at it for a long time.  Refinements to the ammo and the rifle combined with practice to include dry firing will all result in an improvement in your scores.  The course of fire you fired is actually called "The National Match course" and generally includes sighters in at least one stage.  The difference in NRA matches and CMP matches is largely that CMP matches do not have sighters.  Stay with the reduced course matches for a while until you get comfortable with your techniques and equipment and then graduate yourself to full course matches where you will learn to make sight adjustments and that the wind and lighting will actually affect the flight and POI of the bullet on paper.  Hang in there!  7zero1 out.

Yes....put a NM freefloat tube on the rifle.
A good leather sling will help also.

Thanks for the encouragement.  I am really looking forward to doing it again.

Funny thing I noticed was that at 45 years old, there was only one guy there younger than me.  Don't know if that is normal or not, but seems a shame there wasn't some younger guys or even some high school kids out there.

Is this sport generally dominated by older shooters?

At our Club, most of the shooters are 40+, but we've recently had a few shooters in their 20's, and even a teenager.
Maybe things are looking up.

It seems that the younger folks like more action, like their video games. (I just turned 50).

I went out and practiced some today.... on a 200 yard gong, but shooting in the match positions.  I loaded up some 69 grain Sierras and up to 25.5 grains of Varget.  I also put on a Brownells match type leather sling - to replace the GI nylon sling.  Wow the deliberate sling sure seems solid compared to the hasty.  I think I will do considerably better in the next match.

Heres another thing that will be a tremendous help......
Take a 1" paster and place it on an index card or similar sized piece of cardboard. Mount this at eye level 15.5 yards away. Practice dry-firing at the paster in all your gear, the same as in a match. This is an excellent tool for improving trigger control and offhand scores, plus it doesn't burn up ammo and you can do it in the backyard.
You can even use it to work on your sitting and prone positions, although you'll have to adjust the height of the card due to the short distance.

Welcome to the sport........

I got to use the match sling and handloads today, worked pretty good... shot a 466 9X at the club event, and placed first (just 9 shooters).  Maybe next time I should try one of those fancy coats.

Sir, obviously you're seeing some improvements!  I recall you mentioned you were going to install a float tube on the rifle.  I assume you realize that sling tension on the barrel will cause the group to wander on paper if you don't have a float tube yet.  A good coat is a worthwhile addition for any high power shooter.  Even one of the cheaper cloth type will help improve your scores.  However if you can afford it I highly recommend you check out Creedmoor Sports Inc.  HTH, 7zero1.

Thanks for tip!  I will check out that coat.

Yes I plan on sending a different RRA upper I have back to RRA for a freefloat tube installation, tomorrow.  It has their stainless barrel on it.  The one I have been shooting in the matches has RRA's chrome-lined chromoly barrel.  It is not floated either but I think I want to keep it lighter with just the GI handguards.

I think I may want to try some RRA match sights too.
