Tired of using big clunky muffs that force me to focus too much on range commands, and not enough on training.
Looking at Peltor Comtac IIs - any reviews? They seem to be well recieved, but I want to make sure I'm buying something that will hold up to a fair bit of use. I've seen sweat ruin the Dick's/Walmart sold electronic hearing pro. |

Have the Comtac II's purchased just the headset (not the whole comms kit) from BossSafety for around $245.
Easy battery install and they stay in firm and secure (water proof). Very comfortable and easy to adjust. Very light weight for me. The sound is very good. I tried a $400+ pair of Fudd muffs at a Gandor Mountain that had electronic sound amp and everything sounded like it was underwater and echoed. The Comtac II's are crystal clear sound and it sounds like you're hearing everything through a recording using good stereo headphones. Easy to adjust as well and they fit very nicely under my MICH. Pretty nice. Nicely priced. Easy to add on comms if you want. Good stuff the whole way round. |
| I use a set of the Comtacs that I got from Tactical Command Industries on sale, I think around $190 shipped. Makes class a lot easier & I actually wore them all day for 3 or 4 days in a row Dove hunting the last few years. The gel ear seals make them a lot more comfortable. Only thing I don't like is that the battery compartment is poorly sealed. But, the Sordins (last I heard) aren't in stereo while the Peltors are. |

Sordins have separate mics for each ear, so, yes they are in stereo.
FYI... I did an in depth review of electronic ear pro a few years ago in another section of this site (maybe a Team Member can dig it up?) I have owned and used the following earpro: the Peltor Comtac (the original model, as the Comtac II did not yet exist), the Peltor Tac 6S, the Sordin Supreme Pro, and one of the Pro Ears models. Here is a short summary: Pro Ears: pro: Best sound suppression of all models; relatively low cost con: least rugged...not suited for "rough and tumble" tactical training; won't fit under helmets; exposed single on/off/volume knob allowed accidental turn on Peltor Tac 6S pro: decent sound suppression; will fit under some helmets; low cost for electronic ear pro; good battery life; more durable than the Pro Ears con: batteries/electrics are exposed to moisture from sweat; batteries are a pain to change (removing ear pads); on/off knobs allow accidental turn-on; uses AAA batteries Peltor Comtac pro: good sound suppression, very rugged; batteries easy to change; uses AA batteries; long battery life; electrics shielded from moisture (see note below); activation/volume buttons prevent accidental turn-on; automatic shut-off feature; will fit under helmets con: battery compartment not water resistant, battery compartment interferes with cheek-weld for lefties Sordin Supreme Pro pro: good sound suppression; very rugged; long battery life; electrics and batteries shielded from moisture; activation/volume buttons prevent accidental turn-on: automatic shut-off feature; does not interfere with cheek-weld; will fit under helmets con: batteries not easily changed; uses AAA batteries For the record, I replaced the Comtacs with the Sordin's solely because of my being a lefty and the cheek-weld issue. Peltor addressed the cheek-weld issue with the re-designed ComTac II's. If all you are doing is square range plinking or an easy pistol course, the Pro Ears will be fine. If you are doing slightly rigorous stuff, then the Peltor Tac 6S will fit the bill. For the rough and tumble training courses, get the ComTac's or Sordin's and don't look back. |

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Peltor Tactical Sport:

I usually wear the orange in-ear inserts with NRR 28 muffs on top and I'm not sure if it is fair to compare that with electronic hearing protection. |

I paid $69 for Peltor Tactical 6 from Cabella's. I've had them for 3 years and wear them frequently while instructing and our just recreational shooting.....
They are more than sufficient all though the batteries are a bitch to change. What were they thinking with that set up. I have not used any other brand so I can't compare but these work well, are light weight comfortable and at that price, well worth it. Pathfinder 6 Semper Primus! |
