Can any reccomend a good armorers school for the AR15 platform?

Does RRA , DPMS , Bushmaster etc hold any schools...?

Do the basic Colt course.  It costs a little, but it's a good course.

Look here for details.

Using them a lot and building a few would be my next recommendation.

I've been wanting to jump on one of these for a while now

I took the colt school, great course.  It is basic though so don't plan on knowing how to perform barrel changes or things of that degree but it is still pretty good

What the hell does it teach then? Barrel changes are a pretty simple proces as it is.

I was thinking the same thing, what does the basic course review?

I highly recommend Greg Sullivan's (SLR15.com) AR armourer's course.  Two days of fast-paced instruction and he provides lots of interesting anecdotal information while you work.  He provides all the instruction, workbooks, and tools (and varieties of each tool) to guide you through the complete disassembly of your rifle down into its components and then, most importantly correctly re-assemble those components back into a safe and correctly functioning firearm.

I took the colt course also. Good course.

I did  write up about it but couldn't find it in the archive.

I would take it again.

If I remember write it took me 13 or 14 minutes to fully disassemble and reassemble a complete rifle.

Blackwater teaches the Bushmaster Armorers course down there.

Sully of Defensive Edge teaches an amorer course and he'll take his show on the road if you get enough buddies interested.

From what I understand of the Colt course you need Military or LEO credentials to get a slot it's in such high demand.

The proper way to tell people you've been to the COLT school???

+1 for Defensive Edge.  It was a great course, and you WILL remove/install a barrel!

Do any of the other Mfgrs courses supply the rifles like Colt does?

Does anyone besides Colt teach an  M16/M4  MG armorers course AND supply the rifles?

I took Sully's course last year. Defensive Edge teaches an AR15/M16 armorers course AND they do supply rifles for anyone that wants one for the duration of the course.
Hell, we disassembled our bolt removing the ejector, A2 rear sight, removed our barrel, properly staked our carrier key, checked the firing pin and head space, and then upgraded our extraction system with improved components.  We disassembled and assembled our lower receiver so many times that I can almost do it blind folded.  Kroil is my best friend.

+1 to the SLR15 armorer's course.

Course review page

Plus, once you attend, you get to purchase an SLR15 rifle at a reduced armorer's rate.

+2.

I took Sully's course and couldn't be happier.  Thus far, it has been the best armorer's school I have taken, to date.

We are a rifle manufacturer and have a training division that offers rifle armoring & instructor courses, and tactical courses all over the country.  We offer open enrollment courses, and closed enrollment courses depending upon hosting facilities and subject matter.  If people would like a course in their back yard, it is as simple as getting ahold of us to work out the details of hosting a classroom or range based course, and in exchange for hosting a course we will provide you with a couple of complimentary free spots in the course.

Here is a basic overview of what our AR15/M16 Rifle Armoring Course entails.

AR15 / M16 ARMORING COURSE
(this course is open to everyone)

SLR15 Rifles is featured in the current issue of Guns & Ammo Magazine Tactical Guns & Gear Annual, Shooting Times (January 2008), and   October 2007 SWAT Magazine Cover Article on our Grail Rifle , and the  March 2006 SWAT Magazine Cover Story. Our Armoring Course has taught for a decade all over the country. The armoring course with our shooting course was reviewed in SWAT Magazine September 2004 Article. This course is currently mentioned in the August 2006 issue of SWAT Magazine, and you will see another great picture of one of our rifles in the December 2006 (pg.74) issue as well.

Here is a brief overview of what is covered and I can tell you it is a very busy hands on full 2-days of AR15/M16 Armoring:
History of the Weapon
Cycles of Function
General Disassembly & Assembly
Identification of Common Problems and Parts
Nomenclature
Identification of Group Components
Semi, Burst, and Full Auto Parts and Conversions
Complete Armoring Disassembly / Assembly
Barrel Replacement
Cleaning and Maintenance
Sight and Distance Considerations
Ballistic Issues
Barrel Twist, Length, and Choices
Gas System
Parts Interchangability, including Brands
Headspace
Firing Pin Protrusion
Trigger Jobs
Chamber Inspection and Polishing
Accessories and Customizing
Tool Options and Selection
Iron Sights (A1/A2/A3) Disassembly/Reassembly
Optics
SOP/MOD Accessories and Additions
Etc

All tools, manuals, and anything else that is necessary is supplied. We will provide rifles with prior arrangements so we know how many to bring. We prefer that students bring their own weapon systems to get familiar with their own configuration and modifications, plus this allows the time for a good thorough cleaning and inspection, plus we can replace and repair any parts necessary. This is a very intensive course that we cover in 2-days, so be prepared to get a lot of hands on knowledge.

All that successfully complete this course will receive Armorer's Certification, and will also have an opportunity to purchase a SLR15 rifle at a special Armorer's rate.

They show you how to completely dis-assemble and then re-assemble an A2 sight?

The two courses I have heard the best reviews, for the individual, is Sully's and Dean Caputo's (sp?) these seem to be the ones that really get you into the AR15 platform and function.

Barrel Changes have been removed from the Colt course as someone posted.  And replaced with 12 more iterations of tear down and rebuild of the A2 sight ROFL.

The Colt course is the gold standard and you do need LE or DoD ID to get a slot.  There is talk that they will be standing up an Advanced Armorers Course.  Prereq's will be having been thru the basic course twice, IE 6+ years on the Job.

Sully's course teaches barrel and front sight/gas block removal as well as taking apart the A2 sight.  Literally, you take apart your WHOLE gun and put it back together.  (with no extra parts when you are done!)  No Kool-aid is served, but you may bring your own coffee!

ETA:  In my opinion, changing out a barrel would be a huge reason to attend an armorer school.  If that part is skipped, you would be missing out on a huge aspect of the weapon system!

I never knew the A2 sight was so problamatic...

Cool.

So the "gold standard" is a sub par course.

I bet it costs twice as much too.

Actually its pretty cheap IIRC, 350 normally, if you dont tie in a certain number of slots in the class as part of your purchase of Colt weapons

Less than Beretta, about the same as Sig, Much less than KAC and only about .5% of what Dillon Aero costs.

To register for the Colt Course you have to be LE, retired LE, MIL, retired MIL, private security, or a civilian that works on LE/MIL weapons as part of your profession; i.e. professional gunsmith, trainer, etc.

DrDeath,
I see that you are in Illinois.  We have several Law Enforcement Armoring Courses coming up in Illinois.  We are working on possibly getting an open enrollment course in Illinois sometime after the first of the year.  We will post the course notice as the final details are set in stone.
