Start close, 7-10 yards and work your way back.
I have no idea about the 6 o'clock hold.

Oh, and take a class, the sooner the better.

The six-o'clock hold is mainly for target use on a round bull's eye.  For most practical defensive shooting you want the bullet to hit just above the front-sight blade.  At ranges up to about 25 yards with most handguns, you do not need to worry about bullet drop, unless your target is smaller than a jack-rabbit.

Start with a basic pistol class.....You need to learn the fundamentals NOW...Before you start picking up and reinforcing bad habits... Check out your local clubs shops for reputable instructors..
This might cost some money but it will pay back 10 fold.....

Good luck and welcome

I also agree with a basic pistol course.  It will teach proper fundamentals for sound marksmanship skills and firearms handling and safety.

Obtaining accuracy?  Dead on target?  How about from nearly contact distance on out.  Start close.  As close as your accuracy dictates, maybe even as close as 3-5 yards, shooter ability dependant.  Try for about a pie pan sized group (6"-8") in the upper torso area (high center mass) with consistency.  When you can maintain this accuracy while increasing your speed to more of a rapid fire pace, then it is time to move backwards and begin the process again.  From the new distance, slow down, get the combat hit grouping mentioned above and then work on the speed.  Repeat.

Then throw in some movement and other techniques and progress from there.
