I have a daughter working as a nanny in CT. The job is starting to go south on her and it looks like I will be flying back east in a couple of weeks. The plan is that she will pick me up at JFK in her car and we will get on the I-95 and head south to Florida and then shoot back to AZ on the I-10.
This is going to sound a little silly to you guys, but, I have never used a toll road! They just don't have many of them out here. Google maps says that there are several in NY on the way home. My question is this. Do you have to have exact change for these things? Do they take debit cards? How much is the typical toll? I don't want to be holding up the line at the booth counting quarters! Any other tips you can give me? I will not be armed while in NY/NJ Thanks for not making to much fun of me |

If you are leaving JFK and crossing Staten Island to get to the New Jersey Turnpike you will pay $15 cash for the toll (not kidding). You could cut that in half going up to either the Throggs Neck or Whitestone to George Washington but it is a trek to save $7.50. The bridges into New Jersey will be free. I do not know the Jersey Turnpike tolls but you need to plan for those as well as the Delaware Memorial Bridge. After that I have no idea. Forget the quarters. Bring cash in fives, tens and singles. They will make change. In about a year or so it will be cashless around here and all done with our EZ Pass transponders or a bill sent to the registered license plate taken from a photo. |

Thanks for all the info. I have family in North Carolina I figured we would hit on the way, while we are on that side of the country. Also not sure what the weather will be like that week as it is getting close to Thanks Giving so was looking to get out of the snow belt ASAP. ETA probably wont go all the way to Florida, will cut across on the 20 from NC.
Thanks, again |
| Cash lanes are typically to the far right, sometimes on left. Purple stripes on the road are EZPass. Look at the toll plaza too for blinking lights and signs. You'll be fine don't sweat it. Millions of idiots do it every day and statistically you are smarter than half of them. |

The tolls leaving NYC proper have actual toll barriers that go up and down for each vehicle that passes. You need cash money, and aim for the cash lanes.
As to the rest in NY if you notice all the new signage, if you don't have cash, you can still zoom through in the EZ pass lanes, and they will send a bill to the registered address of the license plate. So that is convenient. You can also go online and order an EZ pass, put an initial amount on it, and have it in hand before you ever get in the car. EZ pass is recognized in a ton of states. You can also buy an ezpass at the cash lanes. |

I did the inverse a few months back (FL to NY via I-95) and I'd rather drive un-armed across the whole fucking middle East handing out Bibles than take that route again!
Fuck NY, NJ, DE, MD, DC and SC. "Sometimes the longest way around is the shortest way through" Believe me, between traffic, outrageous Tolls, fuck-tards bobbing & weaving, Cops that want to toss your vehicle, accidents, two lanes where you need six, etc. just don't do it, find another way around.
FWIW: I have a Class A CDL with multiple endorsements, and while I don't currently Driver Tractor Trailer, I've done about 50,000 miles this year and its the worst I've ever seen out there. Bring a shotgun (just in case) in a locked case, ammunition in the factory boxes (separate) declare it at the Airport, and take it with you. So long as you're passing through, and its unloaded and "locked away" there's no issue anywhere. |

If its a bit west 78 to 81 is a much more pleasant drive and cuts out a lot of aggravation and tolls. Even if you have to cut off 81 early and take the backroads through VA on your way south, its may be a few minutes longer, but will save about $20 in tolls and a lot of aggravation. |

SC ? besides being long and only 2 lanes only issues i have had it with.. Ive made the trek from fort Myers to Poughkeepise 8 times now.. It sucks period. Fastest i did was 20 hours.. longest was 26 hours... If you want to avoid the tolls in DE,MD and part of NJ take i-78 to pa and down i-81 the choice than is stay on i-81 and hit the back side of NC or take i-83 to 15 in pa (past Gettysburg) to Fredrick MD and you can pick up i270 to i95or i495 again and go around DC. |

Where in NC are you stopping? If its the western part of the state the I-78 to 81 to 77 route is a much nicer trip than down 95. Fewer tolls too.
You'll want to work on the timing of the trip as well. Leaving JFK after 2:30 or 3 PM M-F will can add 1 to 3 hours on to your trip due to traffic, especially if its a Thursday or Friday. |
