Tonight I took my kids to their first night. I planned on surfing the net like the other dads who had kids in the class, but we all ended up as students. The reason being is that some states no longer honor hunters education that is less than ten hours per the instructor. I haven't seen anything from the NYS DEC explaining this, and just went on the instructors word.
Anyone else hear this? |

Just got for 2 hours then leave, that makes 10. Way back when I had mine, we started at 8am. The instructor walked in and said "How long have you been here, since 6 o'clock?" We all responded, no 8AM. He said "What's that, since 6AM?" We all looked confused. He said "Good, that's two hours right there." |

It could vary by state. I wouldn't see a reason for the talking point; he is a volunteer so there is no incentive for inflating the class.
I do know the standards for new classes are there but I hadn't heard any rejection of older course certs. They are actually getting more uniform from state to state. Look at the book- most states are using that same book that is created by the sportsman education conference group. |

They upped the hours without really changing the course content. They have since filled that time and then some. It is a tough balance seeing as the average age is 12 and they can only take so much per day. |

Mine was a 10 hour class but actually lasted 8 hours. It was always referred as an 8 hour class. There was enough time to cram everything in 8 hours. I'm guessing the extra 2 hours was for outdoors like shooting practice in upstate areas? I took mine inside a LGS back in 2004.

Tell the instructor to shove it up his ass. If you've had a license for a few decades you're good. Funny you say that. it's the old timers who never took a course that says newer hunters should take the classes while they are exempt. And many of these old timers are usually the ones that have the most mistakes. Shooting horses from a porch thinking it was a whitetail, shooting anything that moves through the thick brush without verifying it's the intended target, shooting at white when it's an idiot stalking in the woods during gun season with out orange or fully covering up colors that look like a deer, etc. |

I just poked around Colorado's website - they say they will honor cards from another state, but to check in advance. Nothing specifically stating that a 10 hour course was required.
What other states did they specifically mention? I think I heard them say Wyoming , and there was at least one other... |

Family friend and life long serious hunter planned his annual trip to Colorado for...Elk maybe? Not sure anyway they asked for proof if his safety course and wouldn't take last year's NYS licence as proof. After 30 years of hunting he had to retake the NYS safety course. Quoted:

That's been the norm for years because many states had folks exempt from courses because they were Iicensed prior to them having courses. Hell it wasn't all that long ago when there was a state or two that still didn't have a course requirement. |
