Guys,

I haven't been to Brookhaven in a long time. (Joined a private range a few years ago)

Seeing as how I just got a new 20" upper and that Brookhaven was always a decent place to sight in a rifle, I've been thinking about going back.

Here's the thing:

I have some dim memory of reading a sign posted near the 100 yd/200 yd benches that said you couldn't shoot from those benches unless you were using a scope.

Is this true?

I'm an irons guy.

Thanks

I haven't worked there  since  2009(?), but that WAS the rule, though there were some exceptions made but they depended on a few things.

If no one here has a better up to date answer I can ask someone who's working now.

Thank you.

Just curious, what's their thought process on that rule?

I used irons on the 100 yd bench last week. No one said anything.

Thought process was that of the head RO.  The 200 yard side target frames are made out of wood. Head RO is the guys that has (or had) to build the frames. Got tired of people shooting them to pieces. By limiting it to scoped rifles and better shooting, the frames lasted a lot longer.

When I was there exceptions were made for some people, regulars who we knew could shoot. But even then it was a sometimes thing. You can't really tell someone they can't while someone else is.

While not an official answer, a friend of mine likes to shoot irons at 200 yds.

Originally, they wouldn't let him shoot 200 yds without optics.

He had to shoot in front of the RO the first time to prove he was a competent shot.

After that he had no problem. Sounds ass backwards to me, but that's how it was.

This was last year though. Who knows about now.

You're supposed to have a zero'ed in rifle, with scope, at the 100\200 yards concrete benches.  Although, I have shot irons (when also shooting scoped) at the 100/200
You can shoot irons at the 100 yd benches.
Phil will cut you some slack.  Mike may not.  If it's crowded, no way.  Today, it was empty.  Mike was in a good mood, A guy even started unpacking a rifle at the cease fire and he didn't get yelled at too bad.
I like Brookhaven because it's SAFE and managed.   I'll take Mike's uber-carefulness over all the 'tards at Calverton, anyday.  You can keep it.  I also got yelled at by that bitch for picking up my brass where she said i was taking someone else's brass.  Fuck off.  And get a fucking rifle bench instead of a rusty nail.

It's true, Calverton's a shit hole, but I like to shoot prone and that's no good at Brookhaven.

out here in LI we don't have much to choose from... Saturday this past weekend at Calverton was actually a complete pleasure.  Empty, the RO was in a good mood and Harry stayed away

Oh yeah, I know. If the weather's good I'm planning a Calverton trip next Sunday. Hopefully it's not mobbed now that the hunting season crush has passed.

I've seen similar things happen.  They wouldn't let this one guy move over to the 100/200 line unless he could prove he could hit the bull's eye at 50.  Oddly, I've never had to do that and never been given a hard time about migrating between the firing positions.  But they definitely have some method of profiling people.

You get to know who's safe and who's not. Who can shoot and who can't. The hard part is breaking that news to them.
