Anyone want a 7R DMP?

I would trade it for a 7M. I have no clue why we don't get a 7M second choice yet, we are overrun with them over here.

Or, if you have a place in 7R I could fill a tag that would be sweet too.

I assume they're already out?   With the lifetime license I always lose touch with when they're available. A quick look at the DEC website says when they close, but not when they start.

The earlier the better I say. Lets get the deer hunters in and out as quick as possible so the grouse hunters and trappers have more room

I usually try to fill my tags as fast as possible and then get back on the river after ducks. Deer hunting the last few years has become boring to me, but I still like the meat. 3 deer worth of meat makes a lot of healthy burger and roasts for us.

I too like to vary what I focus on from year to year.  Some years I've really cut my deer hunting back to go for ducks and other small game.  I've been back on the deer focus the last few years really enjoying the group I've been hunting with.   Variety is the spice of life.

I just grew sick of it as I got better at hunting other species.

I shot my first deer when I was 12 and for 15 years we hunted the hell out of them. I just prefer the challenge now of going after birds. Plus, everyone turns into a real prick around here during deer season, like they are out after a record breaking trophy. We have taken some great looking bucks, but they taste the same to me as a big fat 3 year old doe. I am in it for the meat mostly.

Everyone around here turns into the great white hunter for a few weeks once November rolls around drives me crazy, they just go to camp and drink and then wander into the woods and complain "there isn't as many deer as there used to be" after sitting for 3 days and giving up. My season starts in Sept with geese and ends in Feb when I pull my Muskrat traps out. I wish I could get paid to hunt and trap (furs are way down) I would be at work all the time.

I've been pretty fortunate where I hunt. A dairy farm in Columbia county (600 acres)
and out in Steuben I hunt 280 acres that butt up againt 6600 acres of State.

I primarily bowhunt the dairy farm and hunt Steuben with a shotgun/rifle.  God there
are ALOT of deer out there.  We usually hunt bucks day 1, then go for meat on day 2,
usually smacking 3 or 4 that day. Then we switch back to bucks again.  I'm lucky to be
on private land all the time so we hunt as a team. It's amazing how successful you can
be when 4 or 5 guys hunt a plan.  Drives are just stupid as deer run all over the place.

I'm the cook, and I've shot deer off the back porch while making Osso Bucco in the kitchen
and had a herd of deer run away from the guys in the woods.  I have a German shorthair
for pheasant - my favorite thing to hunt, but I would be kidding myself if I said I dont love
(live for) deer season.  It sounds corny , but being a deer hunter is what defines me - and I
wait for the season all year long.  It's how I measure my passage through life.  Not birthdays,
anniversaries, Christmas but opening days.  I also get time to sit in God's country, be still and
contemplate life.

But first comes Salmon season up by Lake Ontario. Last year we landed 96 kings and I swore
I never wanted to tie into another one again.  Funny how after a year I long to "feel the tug of an
angry salmon" again....

7M is high first choice, you should be able to 7M/7R and get them both.

Let me know if you go for it.

I wish they would just give us a 7M second choice, they are like freaking rabbits out here.

I can relate. We used to hunt a private farm and it was that one time of the year when all the guys in the family got together. No one worried about work for a week or two and we just had a good time and filled our tags.

I have transitioned from the young guy in the group to a group leader now and the young guys go with me and sit where I tell them. It is fun when everything clicks, but the older I get the more I think about work as I sit out there, or bills, or my baby girl. Too much alone time for my brain, at least going after birds and trapping you are always moving and always active, that's how I shut my brain off.

I'm a classically trained french style chef BTW. You should see what I make for the 1st week of
Deer season.  I can promise you that people go home GAINING weight - even though we smash
through and around the woods for days on end.  As far as food goes, skys the limit and everyone
gets to pick a dinner.

I've done everything from full on New England lobster bakes, to braised veal shanks, to crown roasts
of pork. Not to mention the staples of a big pot of chili and split pea soup - always in the crock pot for fast
lunches on the go.  Bacon wrapped tenderloins w/hollandaise, sauerbraten w/spaetzle and braised red
cabbage from the farm - It really is a labor of love doing it for some of my best friends on earth.  I live on the
Ocean so I usually bring up a bushell of clams, steamers and mussels for snacks, enough butter, garlic and
shallots to float a tug boat.  Gout is a big concern for all of us  . I start making sauces and stocks weeks
ahead, real french onion soup. Bake breads and rolls, honey cross buns, baugettes its really quite silly
but SO worth it.  Pounds of slab bacon and eggs w/hash browns for B-fast every day its pretty obscene actually.

And then there are ALWAYS fresh backstraps and tenderloins fresh after the gut job with onions in a skillet for lunch too.
Nothing quite like cooking a piece of venison that hasnt ever dropped below live body temperature........

Zoomer, you're killing me!  my poached eggs on toast at 7am are no longer keeping my hunger at bay.   I could have just finished a whole prime rib and that would sound delicious.  I'm just a hack in the kitchen but I do love GOOD food.  I'm not afraid to get online grab a recipe and try something new even if it's complicated.  My biggest not up to par things are bread dough rising.  I often get flat looking loaves.  They still taste good but they're not 'there' yet.  You sound like a man after my own heart as far as putting effort into food to make time with friends happy.

I wish I didn't have such a taste for foods, I'd be skinnier and not taking anti gout meds.   gout caused me to miss more days of work than any flus or anything else.   With meds I'm good.

mmm, medalions of fresh seared venison tenderloin over fresh mixed greens, finely slivered red onions, a good crumbled blue cheese, and dressing of olive oil and reduced balsamic.  A little fresh ground pepper and maybe some sea salt.   A chunk of good bread and a glass of merlot.

ETA- ok, thread drift. the op needs a DMP tag swap.  Thanks for the reminder too, last year I went in to the town clerk's for mine the day after the cut off.

I always go for it the first day and have drawn my first choice the last 4 years running.

7M is high first though and 7R is high first and second. Even when 7M was medium though I still drew, my grandpa has two pref points this year and will probably still strike out, he does every year.

On the subject of ducks.

A friend of mine secured a some good corn fields in Groton, if they are chopped in Sept. you are welcome to join us for geese if you bring some decoys.

Your also welcome to do a river float with me any time you want. I am always up for some duck blasting.

I used to live on Oneida lake by Borios restaurant.
Damn I saw some real bruisers running that swamp. Dont know how the hell you would hunt it though it was
always deep with water. Mind you this was early - mid 80's though.

I live in Cortland and hunt Chenango, we have been using rifles for awhile now.

I couldn't ever get a shot over 150 where I hunt but I feel way better with a rifle than I do with my shotgun. Shot a lot of deer with my 20 gauge but my .223 is like a laser beam, makes clean kills a little easier.

I know plenty of guys who have killed deer with .223 and .22-250 but I can't bring myself to shoot that cartridge. I don't like it when a deer runs after I shoot. I know that shot placement is crucial when hunting but I have always appreciated the margin of error shooting a 12ga into the boiler room.

I was shooting reloaded 70 gr spire points last year. Dropped one where she stood and another only went about 40 yards before going down.

I agree though, not a good round for a new  hunter because of buck fever.

I have seen my cousin pull a few shots that he should have been able to do one handed, shakey bastard.

I have met a few people that like the .22-250 for it's explosive power for neck shots.  I pretty much shudder at the very notion of neck shots let alone with a 22 cal bullet.  .22-250's pretty much only have a twist for the light bullets so that's another mark against it.  Will it work, yep, do I think it's optimal or even good; nope.  I would be more comfortable with a .223 Rem with the right twist for a heavy bullet.  On top of that I'd be more choosy on my shots to avoid a mess.

Most deer shot well are dropped within 200 yards and the majority within 100 or even 50.  Even with a good shot, I don't expect a lightning bolt drop on their ass effect.   Even with a .30 cal rifle I go for the double lung shot through the shoulder or behind it if quartering.   I skip a fair amount of shots that don't think are optimal.  Just gives me more time in the woods.

I do want to test out some sierra 65 grain bullets one of these days.  They're in the drawer.
