Retiring, actually retired now.The Wife wants to move and live in a couple of different places.New York,Port Jefferson area,Californa L.A. or neighboring counties. We currently live in Southern Az.If anyone could educate me on the State taxes of New York,What the Crime is like,Housing Market and general cost of living.I am a Shooter and realize many of my weapons would be banned in Californa or New York.Any constructive input would be appreciated.

NY has high property taxes, high school taxes, high sales taxes, high gas prices/taxes, income taxes, permanent assault weapons ban that mirrors the fed one, handgun possession requires a permit which depending on what county you're in can take over a year to get issued

one the plus side it has 4 seasons, great scenery, plenty of outdoor activities year round

edit: forgot to add, the gov't is mostly democrat or "republicans" that would be laughed at if they tried to run as republicans in other states. NY gov't has major spending problems which is only going to lead to more taxes. NY spends more on medicaid than multiple other states combined, I've heard it said that we spend more than TX and CA combined

Get two girlfriends half the wife's age, ship  the wife to NY or CA and stay the fuck in AZ. Seriously pretty much everyone who lives in NY is planning on moving to another state when they retire. NY is easily one of the top ten worst states to retire in.

You would be better off in CA.  I'm visiting NY right now and learning about some of the gun laws., AR's are illegal and you need a special license to own a handgun.
In CA, AR's and all the features (collapsible stock, FH, bayo lug etc) of an AR are legal with a "bullet button" installed and handguns can be purchased without special permits.

NYs AWB is much better than CAs.

We can have preban ARs with all the evil features...or we can have post ban ARs with neutered features (no bayo lug, no tele stock, no flash hider).

Yes, you need a license to even OWN a handgun. And it takes a lot of time to get one. BUT - at leat MANY counties in NY state give you FULL CCW licenses...try that in southern CA.

Number 1:  I do believe this is a first.  Somebody from AZ wanting to retire to NY?  Interdasting.  I'm not gonna try and talk the guy out of it.  As pointed out, the terrain (I love moutains) and change of seasons are nice.  The hunting and fishing are top notch.  But the OP must be aware that politically and economically NY is a shithole and doesn't stand a chance of getting better.  If he is totally rich, with money to burn, that's the only way he could survive here fiscally.

–– is Bullshit.  There is NO WAY California is in any way better than NY, unless of course you mean weather-wise only.  California's nanny state bullshit is like NY on steroids.  AR's are not in any way illegal in NY, there are just certain features not allowed on newer ones.   California Bullet buttons are fucking GAY.  So what if I can't have a flash hider or bayo lug on my post-ban AR?  If I gave a shit about that, I'd spend a few extra bucks and get a pre-ban and I could have anything I want on it.  In NY, (other than NYC) handgun licenses are basically shall issue, albeit many places restrict you to carrying in only certain circumstances and it could take a while to get the license.  But in Kommiefornia, only certain guns on an approved list are available for purchase in the first place.  My head is so full of fuck right now from someone saying CA is better than NY for gun laws.  Are you nuts, dude?

NY is not that bad, you just have to learn to adapt to certain things.

ETA:  Dave beat me to it, I had a lot of typing.

More ETA:  I bet the cost of living in CA is even worse than NY, but I have no factual info to back that up, just a hunch.

Also, ETA: Don't know about CA, but I'm guessing there are no grandfathered 10+ mags there.  In NY, you can have any magazine capacity you want, so long as the mag was made prior to Sept, 1994.  I have some for my G19 and AR's.

ARs are NOT illegal in NY. They can be owned but with restrictions as per the Federal AWB that is no expired in free states.

You live in AZ and your wife wants to move to NY or LA???? I'd say it is time for a new wife.
I would stay as far away from those two crap-holes as possible,
NOTHING here (NY state) is worth coming here for. NOTHING.

Sharky gave you a good idea, you will pay for the BS you get here. Liberals dominate the govt here, we live under oppression and we pay out our ass for the oppression.
CA sucks really bad too, I would venture CA sucks worse than where I live in NY state. CA is loaded with absurd libs too. When I finally vacate NY, CA will not even be a consideration for me.

That being said NYC is absolutely absurd, and I would never, ever consider living there. I live 7 hours away, and all my local govt is republican, but we still feel the oppression of NYC.

Crime in NYC is bad (not as bad as it used to be). Think about it, it is almost impossible for anyone to defend themselves while living in NYC with all the restrictions they have there. You can get arrested for having a pocket knife. Hell, they even outlaw salt in most restaraunts. NYC is a cesspool.

Don't come here,

If you decide on the east coast North/South Carolina are the states you should be looking at. Both states have great climates, good gun laws and a much lower cost of living.  If you want a cold climate with a lower cost of living and good gun laws move to New Hampshire. Seriously, don't even consider living in NYS.

I disagree, California you can have prebans as well.  It's not illegal to posses 30 round mags, just buying and selling them is illegal.
You can also have an AR with ALL the evil features except detachable mag.  But the bullet button takes care of the detachable mag feature and is 100% reversible with no harm to the AR.
Let's face it, it's not hard to drop mags and swap mags with the bullet button.
Also, you do not have to pin the stock in California.
If you get rid of all the evil features, you can have the detachable mag.
So tell me, how is NY better?
All the laws you have to abide permanently alter the AR.
If a California resident decides to move or visit a free state with his AR, a simple swap from bullet button to standard mag release will
put his rifle back to standard configuration.

No, im not nuts, you're just a little confused about California gun laws. That's probably why your mind is "full of fuck" as well.
Learning about both of the states laws, i would take California's and here is why:
You don't care about having the mil spec features, I do.  So that's just your opinion.
California's residents can also own preban 30 round mags. IT's not illegal to possess hi cap mas, just buying and selling them is illegal.
There are only certain OLD models on that ban list like Armalite and old Colt models.
Everything else, Colt 6920-6940, Daniel Defense, LMT, LWRC, Stag, RR, AR pistols etc. are all available.
Owning a neutered AR with no FH, pinned stock, milled off bayo lug would piss me off.
I would rather have the bullet button because it's easily reversible. A California resident could take their AR to Arizona and have fully functioning AR in its intended form.
As far as hanguns, it a free for all.  It takes a while for newer hanguns to get added to the approved list, but they eventually all make it.
The only time you need a permit for a handgun is if you want to conceal carry.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not giving props to the libtard state of CA, just saying it seems like the lesser of the two evils.

CA also has some interesting points as far as guns go over NY:

In CA, you won't catch a violent felony for carrying a loaded handgun in any city without a permit.  It's a misdemeanor, but your life isn't over.
In CA, you don't need a permit to purchase, own, or have a loaded handgun in your home or business.
In CA, if you have a permit to carry, you can carry in any city including LA without any further "endorsement"
In CA, rimfire rifles are exempt from the AWB, while in NY, you can catch a felony for putting a pistol grip folder on a 10/22.
In CA, hi-caps aren't a felony to possess, just illegal to import, buy, sell, etc.
In CA, LE can legally posses their exempt, personally owned patrol rifles, after they retire.
In CA, you can legally carry a switchblade knife with a blade under 2".

California is no paradise for gun owners, but neither is NY, I'd call it a wash as far as gun laws.

Again, try getting a CCW permit in CA...at least most counties in NY are pretty much shall issue.

And I'd rather have a fully functional AR with a detachable magazine...a detachable mag is VERY important not only for home defense, but also for matches and training...who cares about a bayo lug, flash hider, or tele stock?

NY wins hands down.

But really...we both lose.

Congrats!!  You can detach the mag with a bullet button, it just requires you to use a pen, tip of bullet, or some object to depress the button.
I have family in CA. They live in San Bernardino county, which is pretty easy to get a CCW for conceal carry.
LA county is not so easy.  But buying hanguns for home defense is a non issue and requires nothing.
You are correct though, gun owners in both states lose in the end.

zillow.com  zipskinny.com   punch in a few zip codes to see what real estate and demographics will look like in your proposed new home of record.  Pay particular attention to property taxes in NY, as they are always going to go up on average 3-4% per year.  Factor in home heating costs in the winter and A/C costs in the summer.  Port Jefferson is covered by an expensive utility (electric/gas) compared to anything you pay in AZ or will pay in CA.  A gallon of regular is hovering just below $4.00 a gallon and diesel is in the $.4,40 a gal range.  Your "retirement" income is NYS taxable as well as Federally.  On the upside, coming from AZ, you're probably proficient in Spanish, which will make assimilating in your new home in either CA or NY easier culturally, since both have a booming illegal immigration problem.

You've been warned, move to Washington State or NC/SC, but stay out of CA/NY.

Just remember not to have your carcass shipped back to be buried in NYS. Actually I knew about that.  I have no burial plot, crypt, niche or any such final resting place at this time and definitely do not want NY to get their hands on my estate.  I think it was my financial adviser who warned me a while back about that.

A possible plan is cremation out of state, having a niece or nephew take possession and have them follow a privately discussed plan.

The NY tax man could continue to hound your estate after death under certain conditions even though a person had established a new domicile outside of NY. As a former NY resident if you plan on being buried in a family plot in NY you should have a proper estate plan in place to avoid NY estate taxes.
