Not really a bash I have only been to New York City for Yankee games and the memorial so I do not judge. However this is how I feel when I talk to customer service tell them where I live before I get to the upstate albany part. There is much more to this bizarre state then the city.
edit: maybe its me talking to customer service at 1 am in astan-land |

Just my observation that whenever NYC is mentioned, it's only a matter of time before someone on their period starts the NYS vs. NYC shitslinging party.
But back on your topic, yeah I have noticed that some outsiders will automatically assume if you say you in NY, they hear NYC. For the record, I am originally from NYC but maintain residences(or dual citizenship) in both NYC and "NYS" (ie, Upstate) |

Seems Dems would liken themselves as RED like the commies! It is interesting to see that with the exception of the Town of North Hempstead, Long Island is pretty much still Republican. Yes you have Democratic pockets like Glen Cove, Hempstead Village, Islip, etc. The New York Times had an article this past weekend on the "Top 1%" and noted what northwestern Nassau (Manhasset/Great Neck/Port Washington) has a huge population of one percenters that tend to vote Democrat (as confirmed by the map). As for visiting New York City, my late father was from Syracuse and he was always fascinated by New York City. He was a fan of classical music and would listen to WQXR at night or via their Rural Radio Network. He would tell me he would dream of going there someday. That trip finally came when he was visiting cousins in Waterbury, CT and was able to take a train from Waterbury to NYC. He was very impressed. Little do I think he ever suspected he would someday take a job on Long Island with Long Island University and get stuck in the shadow of that city longing to someday go back upstate (his wish was granted after he died and we scattered his ashes around parts of Skaneateles Lake were we used to have a summer place). For me, I grew up on Long Island and my maternal grandparents lived in Ridgewood, Queens. I took many trips with my grandfather into the city when on school vacation and saw many sites and did a lot of things (road the subway a lot and took the SI ferry many times). For me, going into NYC is something I try to avoid. Funny thing is, I like going to visit Toronto yet my family living in the suburbs of Toronto doesn't really like to go in because it is a pain. Same feeling I have about NYC. If you leave nearby, what is the big deal? |

absolutely true. in basic the DI handed me the live chicken to kill figuring I was from New Yawk City and all.
when I spun it to break its neck, its sphincter let go all over the good SSG. He probably wanted to kill me but left to change his fatigues. and this SSG was far from the only one who thought NY was only a city. I had to continually explain that we can hunt and fish on Long Island as well as upstate... |

I told her I lived an hour north of Syracuse and she said "Oh, so you're Canadian."

I was only nine at the time and totally unaware of any of it. In fact, I was quite some time before I learned that "Watergate" had nothing to do with the water service! |

Quoted: It would be great except then the dems will get 2 more senators and more congresscritters. What we need is to make it a federal city like DC without voting rights. On the plus side, Schumer would most likely be the Senator from the "new" state (he resides in NYC) and Gillibrand could be voted out. New York State could then elect two new Senators, perhaps ones that could cancel out NYC. |

I hate to admit it but Long Island and Westchester have done pretty good too (heck, Congresswoman McCarthy is from here - yes I know she is Federal not state but the mentality is the same). From Westchester, it was Naomi Matusow of Bedford that for years was pushing for the AWB. Her bill never became law but if you search back to the 1990's, you can see that a lot of the text in her proposed bill encompasses the current proposed AWB II (she was ahead of her time ).From Long Island, you currently have Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel of Great Neck who is the sponsor of the Microstamping legislation in the Assembly. A little over a year ago she was on News 12 Long Island's "Long Island Talks" program and the FAIL was everywhere. I had to turn it off as it was as bad as that old clip of Congresswoman McCarthy talking about that shoulder thingy or the woman talking about heat seeking bullets. |
