On what basis is it legal for me to have a NY permit yet I can't carry in NYC?

because we are not a free state.

There are bars at the state lines, they are just really well camouflaged

The AWB and other violations of gun owner rights aren't legal, but because of the lack of court support from 1879 to 2008 due to Supreme Court cases giving lower courts free reign to completely ignore the 2nd and 14th Amendments, NYS has been able to get away with it thus far.  We're working our way forward to eradicating the AWB and Sullivan Law, but it's a slow process and we're fighting our way back from being that deep in the weeds.  As of this afternoon there is motion in progress to give our side equal footing with the other in the courts to start marching back against the antis.  Stay tuned.

Good to hear. Didn't think there was any solid basis in it and other laws legality.

On the basis that different jurisdictions have different laws.

The AWB may violate the 2nd Amendment, but the concept that possession of something may be legal in one jurisdiction and illegal in another is nothing new or earth shattering.

There is no law or statute that does that, nor does there need to be.  It's a fundamental principle of our legal system that different jurisdictions can have different laws, and that a jurisdiction's laws only extend to that jurisdiction's borders (with limited exceptions).

In your example, you need to remember that the states are sovereign.

Well, that reserves to the states the power to make certain laws.  He's more concerned with the mechanism allowing for different laws under different sovereigns.

Because the language reserves those rights to the individual states I.e. each state individually, not as a coollective.

All fireworks of any kind are banned in New York yet most states at least allow "safe and sane" class fireworks.  Ontario, Canada, which is the epitome of the nanny state, allows all kinds of fireworks for consumers.  Except for Victoria Day and Canada Day, you need simple approval from the Fire Marshal to shoot stuff off.  That approval is readily and easily available.  They just review the safety regulations with you and you are good to go.

For the record, legislation to legalize fireworks is introduced in the NYS legislature every year. A1102A/S0465A A04362 this year I believe. Care to guess which party and which region of the state keep blocking it?

The thing that really is stupid (yes, stupid, is there a better word?) is that a given action can be a FELONY in one state, and just over the state line it's OK.   Yet that felony follows you throughout the USA.   How can something be a FELONY here and totallly legal over an arbitrary line?

More hassle than I care to deal with.  I don't really have any place to set them off anyway.

We went over that earlier.  The states are sovereign, and the very concept of sovereignty requires that the above is possible.

It's not just states.  The borders with Canada and Mexico are just as "arbitrary" as those between states.  See what happens if you bring so much as a .22LR cartridge over the border with Mexico.
