One of my buddy's father bought a house up there and about 6 acres and a few of us are going up there next weekend for his birthday.

I was wondering if anyone knew or lived there if its rifle county or shotgun county or any information on that. I'm planning on bring 1 or 2 guns there to have some fun shooting cans and what not. I'm used to Long Island where you cant do anything except at a range so I'm not sure about upstate rules.

If anyone has any Info or any good things to do or watch out for there, thanks in advance.

As long as you are 500 feet from any neighbors house, you can shoot. Just make sure yu have a good backstop.

regs for hunting have nothing to do with what you are alllowed to target shoot with- yes with a safe backstop and sufficient distance from neighbors (noise courtesy if nothing else) you can shoot anything

Ill bring my shovel I'm just planning on playing with the .22s and maybe some skeet. My friend and his father were up there a few months ago shooting 30-30's and 12 gauges and no one said boo to them.  My PSL is begging me to go tho...

I was just making sure, Thanks

Here is the regs courtesy of NY DEC
Discharge of Firearms and Bows

It is illegal to discharge a firearm or bow:

   * so that the load or arrow passes over any part of a public highway,
   * within 500 feet of any school, playground, or an occupied factory or church,
   * within 500 feet of a dwelling, farm building or structure in occupation or use unless you own it, lease it, are an immediate member of the family, an employee, or have the owner's consent.

Most people in the area are OK with shooting. I had the police called on me once. The officer was friendly and said it looked like we were a good 500 feet from the neighbors so there was no problem.

My family has a place in Barryville, love it. Even if you don't shoot in the backyard there is a "range" of sorts on the state multiple use land along Barker Rd I think between Barryville and Eldred

Last time I was on the Barker Rd. State land(bout a year ago), the informal rifle range was closed.  It may only have been for hunting season though.

a couple of years ago it was closed for big game seasons, but now it seems to be open again just fine. Would be a shame to lose it as a place to shoot though, especially with all the trash left behind
