I want to build a shooting berm for .22lr and 9mm in my backyard. I only have room for a 25 yard range but this is all I need to practice with my Spike's .22lr conv. kit and a 9mm pistol (if the great state of NY ever grants me the right to possess a pistol in their state). There's a slight hill in back of my house that would stop everything but I'd like to build a small berm for the extra peace of mind. I'm thinking 5-6' wide but I'm not sure how deep or high and what to use as for materials. Any ideas?

Rent a bobcat.

Make sure there are no underground utilities around your intended dig site.

Start scraping and piling.

....

Profit!

A bobcat might work, I'm not sure if I could fit one in between the trees to get back to the berm area though.

I was thinking of getting some railroad ties but I'm not sure how much dirt/sand/gravel I would need to stop a 9mm.

Put a sign out fron of your place that says Clean Fill wanted.  Spring is here so the contruction folks will be starting up and truckers will be looking to get rid of loads.  Worked for my dad and he live in the middle of no where

As high as you can make them. My berms are about eight feet high I'd guesstimate

I assume you are of a legal distance from any neighboring houses/structures (500 feet?) ?

And I assume your town does not have a firearm discharge law?

And I assume you will invite us to come over and shoot whenever we want once it's done?

Good idea.

My parents got "Clean Fill" from the town, and had them dump it on the plot where they were going to build their new house.  They let it settle for a year, and it evened the plot out nicely.

When i was younger, i used to build ramps out of dirt and jump them with bikes, atvs, dirt bikes ya know the kind.. anyway as a grew older, and saw the error of my ways as a child, I pilled them all up and made a nice backdrop... To stop a 9m or a 22 you really dont need to much, id say a pile about 5 feet high 3 feet  deep or so of dirt would be more then enough.. carefull getting fill, manytimes it comes with all sorta of goodies that bullets can bounce off of... ( rocks. concrete chunks, ect).. if you cant get a bob cat to your loaction, just think the egyptians built the pyrimaids with nothing but man power,  :) next step would be posting "Free beer per wheelbarrow load" see how many new freinds you make :)

Clean fill shouldn't have all that junk in it, as far as I know.

Yeah. screw the Bobcat......we'll all bring shovels, help you out, and end the day with a shooting session to break in your new berm!

I think my neighbors are at least 500 ft away. I'll have to pull up Google earth and check it out for sure. If they are closer than 500ft do I just need to ask if they're ok with me shooting on my property?

I would suggest using old tires staggerred and filled in the center.
The tires will help w/stability and give you a visual as to how high you want to go.
Then start piling the dirt front and back. To finish off plant some grass to prevent erosion.

The way I read the law you technically can't shoot within 500ft.of your neighbors even with their permission.  Unless you'd be considered their "guest"?  I don't know.  Here is what it says.  Maybe it makes more sense to you than me.  I don't see why you shouldn't be able to shoot near someones house if you have their permission but then again the laws never make much sense.

4. a. No person shall:

(2)  discharge  a  firearm or long bow within five hundred feet from a
dwelling house, farm building or farm  structure  actually  occupied  or
 used, school building, school playground, or occupied factory or church;

b.  The  prohibitions contained in subparagraph 2 of paragraph a above
 shall not apply to:

(1) The owner or lessee of the  dwelling  house,  or  members  of  his
immediate  family  actually residing therein, or a person in his employ,
or the guest of the owner or lessee of the dwelling  house  acting  with
the  consent  of  said  owner  or lessee, provided however, that nothing
herein shall be deemed to authorize such persons to discharge a  firearm
or  longbow  within  five hundred feet of any other dwelling house, or a
farm building or farm structure actually occupied or used, or  a  school
 building or playground or occupied factory or church;

That law does make no sense.

You can't shoot a long bow within 500 ft of a house! Just about everyone that shoots a bow in their backyard breaks that law.

When you put a sign up saying clean fill wanted you get all sorts of goddies in it, you think ppl are gonna filter it out before the load it up??? haha like said when i was younger i used to build ramps, so the clean fill sign was always out front, and sure enough every load had some sorta of debris, or metal or giant rocks, even found a tool box and some tools in one... Even if you say clean fill wanted, ppl still are just gonna dump and run, and now the garbage is you problem...

Maybe it was because they got it from the town or something.  I saw it after my uncle leveled it over the plot they were going to building on.  It was pretty clean, as far as dirt goes.  It wasn't some random dude dumping his unwanted dirt, if that matters.

yeah, we got dirt from everywere.. some loads were good, others were hit and miss, I know a few guys that work for my town, and I my self am in the construction industry, and as sad as it is to say, its pretty much common practice to dump what you can when and were you can, They guys from our town always look for places with fill signs wanted, once sring hits, they go around and clean all the ditches, and all that trash and debris, gets mixed right it, rather then sort through it all and pay to have it dumped here or transported there, theyll find some poor slumb with a sign...
From the way the OP is talking, he may even have a hard time getting a Bobcat to were he wants to build, soo like i said supply the beers man, beer per wheelbarrow load, and its for a good cuase too :)  ( maybe sever the beer after its built and we get to shoot a bit, i know i wouldnt want a bunch of drunk stragners on my land with guns )

No offense, but there is no way you are going to get an 8 foot or so tall berm made with wheel barrows and shovels in any amount of time that could be classified as being efficient.

I'd say if you can't get a bobcat in there, its probably not gonna get made.

Slaving on a shovel and wheel barrow is going to make a cute pile of dirt,,,,at the end of the day you need EARTH and quite a bit of it to make a good backstop.

Don't work hard, work smart.
Machines > shovels and wheel barrows (unless you follow the commie method of using 50x more people than you need just because you have a crap ton of people and don't care what your losses are).

I built ramps that were 6 feet high 4 feet deep 4 feet wide in an day with one other person, its doable.. lets just say the average person can move 1 yard of dirt an hour, he gets 10 ppl there, for 4 hours Or 5 ppl 8 hours, or two ppl and a weekend,  At 27 cubic feet in 1 yard, multiply that by the hours (40) gets you 1080. witch is enough to pile a 10x10x10 berm roughly, when its packed and shaped you can easily get an 7 or 8 foot high berm with plenty of thickness ..., its doable.... and most of us can probably move more then 1 yard an hour.... It wont be easy by anymeans, hence why he is providing the beer, but at 10 guys drinkin lets say 3 beers an hour that a 30 pack an hour, that for four hours is roughly 80 bucks, so for that same amount you higher a guy with a bobcat pay him 20 an hour on his day off to play around and help ya for 4 hours and be at the same place :) thats were the smarter not harder comes in, and you are right, I work construction so i know how it goes, and any chance i get to let an operator use his machine im all for it, but  never under estimate the power of the shovel and wheelbarrow :)

Railroad ties with about 10" sand gravel sandwiched between another RR tie will stop 9mm, .223, .45 acp
