Anyone taken a class with Rochester Personal Defence? Or MTDS? I took Defensive Pistol Skils w RPD, it was a lot of fun, decent instructors, biggest thing i learned was i need to practice a lot more. Thinking about taking a carbine class from either company. Anyone have any feedback on this, Also anyone a member at the Victor Gun Club or have any info, i belong to Candaigua, but Victor is closer if it is Black rifle friendly.
Thanks |

Thanks I would highly recommend against Victor. They are not very black rifle friendly. Have you considered joining Mendon? They are one of the best group of guys you'll meet at a gun club. I've heard both good things about MDTS and RPD classes. I'm planning on taking Chris Fry's carbine class in May, I haven't heard of any upcoming RPD carbine classes. |

You are a member. Do a search on ChrisFry as a topic author in this forum and in the archives. There are a PILE of class reviews, including a few that I have posted. Chris Fry has been teaching carbine classes for a number of years, and has a pretty good following not just in NY, but in neighboring states as well, especially New Jersey.
Carbine 1/2 will be at Otisco lake R&GC (my club) in May. I have trainied with Chris for 5 years and counting now, so I am a bit biased. Chris also brings in some very highly regarded trainers into NY. That is a huge benefit for us in CNY. If you have enough friends and a range to host him at around Rochester, I am sure he would be willing to travel. I am willing to bet you will get a significant number of endorsements for MDTS as soon as they (other MDTS students) see this thread. |

We tried to get Chris out here to Canandaigua last year to do a carbine class but couldn't get enough local guys. If anyone around Rochester would be interested in getting together and having Chris come out to this area let see if we can get something going. |

carbine malfunctions
Chris knows his stuff. You will do a block of drills we lovingly call "malfunction junction" in carbine 1/2. Before I started hosting Fry, I and a few other Arfcommers travelled to Pittsburgh PA to http://fireinstitute.org/ for a 3 day carbine course taught by Pete Georgiades, who is a GunSite alumnus. I can't recommend Pete and his assistant Tony F (mod on the training forum) enough. They also bring in Giles Stock for a 3 day basic tactical pistol class, which we also attended. Time and money well spent. I have been to FIRE a few times now. |

How do you think they felt when I went to join there and when they asked what I shot I told them the only two guns I had were an AK47 and a AR15. They didn't seem too welcoming to that. I believe their rifle range is 2 bays and they only allow it to be used 2 days out of the week? They are primarily a skeet club, I like Mendon which is big in skeet and trap but also have a 50 yd rifle/pistol range. |

Thanks for the feedback, seems like MTDS is a great company and i've had one class with RPD and i know they're good, i guess i'll have to see which class comes up first to fit my schedule or maybe do both over time. I learned from my one class with RPD, that i need to do a lot of practice to prepare myself for that self defense situation that hopefully will never occur. SO practice and training is as important as the 10,000 rds of ammo, 30 pistols, 4 Ar's etc. ;)
Guess Victor is not the place for me, not into trap or skeet at all, i like Canandaigua a lot except the drive, and belong to Rochester Rifle club, Mendon sounds good, GCL seems too busy to me, although its a good club. How is the rifle/pistol range set up at Mendon, what is the shortest and longest range you can shoot at, and how do you go about getting a membership, couldnt find a website. |

Mendon only has a 50 yard range for pistol and rifle. There website is linked below, they are working on a new website. To become a member you have to have a current member sponsor you (if you decide to join let me know and I'll sponsor you) and then you just fill out the membership form and drop it off to the club house. I was a member at GCL but didn't like the fact that you could only shoot from benches (they only have 1 standing position) along with a few other things. . Many times when I go to Mendon I'm the only person on the rifle/pistol range and can do as I please. I was a member at Canandaigua but I'm moving south so I won't renew there because it will be too far of a drive for me. |

Nobody ever mentions Rochester Brooks. One of the best clubs around Roch... but a little bit of a drive. As long as Dave "Rochperdef" doesn't get to far gone with the "new" safety standards. He's in as the new safety coordinator or something. Brooks allows movement and is black rifle and everything else friendly currently. They allow for 180 degree firing and I have NEVER been bothered about my "high" cap mags or whether the rifle is NYS legal etc... And one of the nicest facilities around,
4-Points will be nice as well when the rifle/pistol range is completed. I've taken Dave's classes and they are good for newer shooters. I would reccomend his pistol classes if your just starting out for sure. |

It is/was... I don't think anything has changed for him @ GCL ... I just know he now has his hand in the safety training for new members @ Brooks and he's giving them advice on how to step up their safety program. I already told him not to screw things up there ... I like it the way it is. |

Brooks is actually just as far as CSC, depending on what route you take.
It's also more than twice as expensive and has restricted board-approved membership, and technically (perhaps in practice as well) prohibits shooting forward of the benches on the rifle range, which CSC does not do (except of course when other shooters are behind you). I just wish it was closer! (And, you know, under a huge climate controlled dome.) |

(And, you know, under a huge climate controlled dome.) I can't believe how many guys stop shooting in the winter months. Hell, around here, thats almost 1/2 the year. The trap shooters at my club shoot outside every weekend in their winter league. Don't tell me you guys are going to let trap shooters "out-tough" you! I started an outdoor winter rifle league this year. We have shot in 10F with some wind on 2 occasions, and plenty of snow on others. I must admit I had some chemical handwarmers in my pocket for my shooting hand on those colder days |

Well, you're right, and I have gloves and warm winter gear.
I'd just rather stay here and sip hot chocolate. Not like it's a social event for me, either way. I do intend to get down to CSC this week or next, as my CMMG .22 conversion kit came today, along with three 10-round magazines, courtesy of Palmetto. If any of you guys want to join me, let me know. I prefer weekday afternoons. |

Haven't thought about it yet. They're closed for shotgun dudes on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Flurries are in the forecast all week this week, and I don't like Saturdays because I hate people. Next week might be dry most of the week and highs at or near 40. Be nice to not have to wade through two feet of snow and half a foot of mud to get to the target stands. So, probably next week. MT or TF depending on how the forecast firms up. (I suppose I'm open to Saturdays, I just dislike how crowds prohibit firing forward of the benches. Dunno if they get crowds in March, though.) |

Sure thing. I set my own hours, btw, so shooting on weekdays isn't a problem for me. If it is for you, let me know, I'm okay with Saturdays. I don't have any hours so I can usually shoot almost any day, I have to take my vehicle in either late this week or early next week but aside from that I should be good to go. |

I want a defensive pistol, and a EBR class of some sort. Id LOVE to be able to start doing some rifle training/ drills with a group of guys maybe like every other weekend for a few hours somewhere in rochester. Im angry at myself for not getting out and putting rounds on target and ive lost alotta the touch i barely had to begin with. lol having a group of guys to work off of, just getting together and running different drills with each other would be AWSOME! somewhere that i wouldnt have to drive 2 hours to get to.lol any ideas? |

If we get a few more local guys who post up and would be interested and seeing if we could get Fry out here some time this Summer/Fall I'll send him an email and see what we can do. I would definitely be up for getting together once a month to do some drills/skills type stuff with some of the Rochester guys. I'm moving down to Springwater sometime in the next 7-14 days so it's a bit far from Rochester but if you know of a range that would allow us to do some of this type of stuff let me know. Maybe we can get someone locally to run with this idea. |
