Can someone please clarify the minimum Legal Overall Length for rifles in New York State?  I took a look at the sticky threads and couldn't find anything and a google search really didn't pull up anything definitive.    I was under the impression that NYS didn't call out a specific length so it fell under the federal law of a minimum of 32" OAL.  Can anyone verify this?  Preferably with an actual citation of the law?

I only ask because in this thread: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=485599&sr=0 a user claims that NYS has a minimum OAL of 36" which I had never heard before.

I could have sworn the federal minimum of a rifle was 26 inches as per the national firearms act of 1934http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Firearms_Act#Categories_of_firearms_regulated

ETA: People own folding stocked AK's in NY and with a 16 inch barrel and the stock folded they hover around 27 inches.

Yeah, thats what I was going by as well.  I do know that NY calls out a minimum barrel length of 16" for rifles and 18" for shotguns but doesn't call out anything for OAL.

26"

That also reminds me....    I saw a guy shooting an FS2000 at the local range and that has an OAL of only 29.29".

I may be way out of my league but look in the NY penal code under Section 265.00 Definitions it has reference to a firearm with a barrel under 16 inches and an OAL of under 26 inches.

The wording is weird but it does mention 26" which is in line with what I was thinking.

What's weird?

 3. "Firearm" means (a) any pistol or revolver; or (b) a shotgun having
one or more barrels less than eighteen inches in length; or (c) a rifle
having one or more barrels less than sixteen inches in length; or (d)
any weapon made from a shotgun or rifle whether by alteration,
modification, or otherwise if such weapon as altered, modified, or
otherwise has an overall length of less than twenty-six inches; or (e)
an assault weapon. For the purpose of this subdivision the length of the
barrel on a shotgun or rifle shall be determined by measuring the
distance between the muzzle and the face of the bolt, breech, or
breechlock when closed and when the shotgun or rifle is cocked; the
overall length of a weapon made from a shotgun or rifle is the distance
between the extreme ends of the weapon measured along a line parallel to
the center line of the bore. Firearm does not include an antique
firearm.

Is there a story behind that?

The last thread that asked this question, I had a brain fart and put "29."

this can be chopped a lil yet...     I think its 26 1/2 inches OAL without a perm affixed muzzle device.  If I keep a muzzle device welded in place, I could in reality chop it  almost 2 inches, still maintain a 16.5 inch barrel....and 26.5inch OAL

26inches is SHORT

My MSAR is stock config.

That is sweet, does it accept AR15 mags?

My Brother has one that he picked up right in Alabama...much as I hate to admit it, they are a damn fine rifle.

Copy as in....most parts are interchangeable with original Steyr parts and.... almost the entire thing is built to Steyr specifications.  Only reason they could build it as they did is because the patent expired on the original AUG design.  There are plenty of threads comparing these to actual Steyrs.  These are as good, if not better than the old prebans they had imported.

Love it.  I want a second one.

Mine isnt an E4.  So I can only use MSAR and actual Steyr mags.  I wanted it to be as close to "original" as possible.
