I went to Mitchell Field for the first time over the weekend and saw that they had signs stating "No Full Metal Jacket" ammo. I thought FMJ was the preferred target / range ammo for handguns. What types are permitted there for handguns?

Also, do you know if there are any restrictions on rifle caliber and ammo type? I was thinking of shooting my M1s there and have HXP ammo to feed them.

Thanks.

Just another reason I have not been there in over 15 years.  I shoot M193.

handgun you can shoot any type of ammo. rifle must be hollow point or soft point. they normally ask what youre shooting when you first go in, but they dont normally verify. I've been there plenty of times where the guy next to me is shooting m193 becuase he told the front desk hollowpoint

When I shoot my M1 Carbine, I will show them a box of hollowpoint if asked to do so.
That may or may not be what goes downrange as the M1 round is about the same as a jacketed .357 from my Ruger GP100.
However, I only shoot HP and SP from my ARs there as it supposedly can damage the backstop.
As stated, they will ask, rarely verify.
I was there Thursday before it closed and was not even asked about the ammo at all.

You didn't ask shotgun but shot is a no no for shottys there. Slugs only IIRC.

As others have said ball is fine from pistols, and pistol caliber rifles. Many years ago I was harassed for shooting ball from my Thompson and the range manager told the employee it was fine.

As far as the AR. I forgot how many rich people are on this forum that they can waste M193 at the indoor range. I used to shoot Wolf HP's before I started reloading Remington HP and Hornady SP. I still bring Wolf when teaching someone to shoot.

Shotguns are slug only.

was ther on sunday. I was asked what kind, but they didn't want to see it.  Just shoot the hp's for the rifle, if you want to know...ask.  I find them to be quite friendly.

Wolf screws up my AR.  On the up side I get malfunction clearing practice every time I go there.

You know it's funny, I'd say 7/10 times there they want to see my ammo. Up until 3 years ago I pretty much knew the guys who were there the 2 nights a week we would go. Then they retired and I get the evil eye every time I walk through the door. They ask what I'm shooting and I tell them the appropriate answer and they want to see. Hey it's all legit so I don't mind, but it's also the reason I go there as a last resort.
