All of you have a SAFE and successful day hunting big game today!
Post pics if you've got them ! |
| I just got back in. Wasn't too crazy out there in the state forest I was in. I only almost got shot once. I nearly got a shot on a buck, but he moved behind a tree and disappeared. They are sneaky like that. I like it later in the season anyway. I had one guy slide up next to where I was sitting at about 10:30 a.m. and he had no clue I was there. He was only about 50 yards away and then he gets on his radio and calls his buddy, who walked to meet up with him right through the draw I was hunting. I had been sitting in that spot since 4:30 a.m. too. It seemed like every time anyone shot at a deer that I could hear, they fired three to four rounds. The guy who came up next to me had been about 100 yards further out I'm guessing. He shot at two does and missed about an hour before he scampered over to the edge of the draw. I must have been right in his line of fire because the does ran downhill in between me and where I think he was. I still like the spot I hunt. I got a buck there last year and there is crazy deer sign everywhere. |

Went out sat for 4.5 hours in one stand and another hour or so in another...
I got beat mentally today...it sounded like a war zone in 3 of 4 directions and I never saw movement. Even a little "no shot" movement would have been nice. Lots of friendly gray's and wood peckers though. But from the sounds of the Saiga 12 ROF around me, some folks were trying hard to take all they could. Not a surprise in the area, but its the only private area I've got to work with. Unless something spectacular happens in two weeks, I'll be chalking another bust year on the board. |

Hey, 41magluva, thanks for the tip! I'll have to look into it; still not 100% sure I want to cough up for a mount on this but at the same time it seems like a waste of a 8 point not to! Did that doe bark when you shot her? Yeah, well, I'll be able to cut the steaks with a spoon. And I didn't have to break a sweat during the drag out of the woods. July is coming. How many jello shots do you think we need to make this year? |

Congrats to all of you who have harvested so far.
We hunt literally across the gorge from the original Remington forge, and had shots on either sides of us, but didn't see any ourselves. The next door neighbor shot a 7 pointer east of us about 7AM. The buck dressed out at 160lbs, and was shot about 600 yards from where we were sitting. |

Hunted Sat and Sunday at my Uncles place near Oneonta only thing I saw was a scrawny little button buck and a coyote I couldn't get a shot on. Will have to wait till after Turkey Day before I will be able to get out again.
Congrats to all the successful members!

2nd time ever in the woods. Hunting private property, had 4 does walk past my stand at 40yds. I sighted the largest but decided to pass. I want my 1st deer to be a buck. Watched them graze a bit, then walk off. I was hoping Mr. Buck would make an appearance but he never did. Sunday, spent more time in the stand to no avail. Nothing spotted besides a lot of birds. Had a nice fat squirrel in the crosshairs about 100 yds away. Hell, I needed SOMETHING to look at. Lil' fella had no clue he was marked...lol
I may try to get out again on this piece of property near season end. I'd like to have some snow on the ground. |

Opening weekend sucked for me.
Saw NOTHING on Sat until near darkness when a doe showed up.No shot taken On Sunday, I saw 2 does -on my way to my stand- which quickly ran away without a chance for a shot Monday, I idn't go out, but will go tomorrow and see if I have better luck |

Dad missed a spike when he was scanning at 50-100 yards and it ninja'd its way 5 feet in front of him. Couldn't take the snap shot in time. I'm heading back up to Steuben this weekend for another shot. |

Monday (yesterday), got a 100lb Doe at around 8:20 AM.
50 yards, using Saiga 12 with Federal Truball Slugs. Deer didn't want to die or run, so I walked up and finished her from 5 yards with a shot below/behind the ear from my 10mm. That worked. Dressed it out at home and had venison steaks for dinner. The best was my 3 year old asking for seconds and third helpings of venison steak dinner. |
|
We got 3 deer this year - I didnt pull the trigger on any of them though.
Beats what happened to my other friends hunting at a rental cabin/property in Ulster county. They got RAIDED by 4 game wardens with a search warrant. Looking for baiting and illegal harvest. Imagine 3 ECO's walking circles around your stand looking for corn and apples. They were there for 4 hours!! Didnt find anything but busted the 3 other people on the adjacent property. |

No that was from a friends opening day doe that we quartered up in my yard and missed a piece cleaning up in the dark. |
