Which?  the 700 or the 870?

The smithhaven dicks had a bunch of the 870 express tacticals with 18.5" barrels, 2 round extension, etc. I don't think the display model I looked at had ghost ring sights but I could be wrong. I was very interested until the lackey told me the price was an absurd $450...

You are about a 1/3 of the way there, money-wise, if you are going to do it right Top that bad boy with quality base and rings. Then drop the coin on some GOOD glass.

A friend of mine picked up the SPS Varmint in .308 last year. It came from Dicks with a cheapy scope for ~$500, on sale. He then dropped 1K on a MK4 Leupold 30mm 6.5-20 tactical mildot and quality rings, base. It is well under MOA with Fed Gold Match under field conditions, like a ~2 inch group at 360 yards on his private range if he works at it. Adirondack1 tuned the trigger and smoothed the action for him a bit out of the box. Now all he needs is a better quality stock, although you can't really gripe on the accuracy with the factory synthetic stock.

I have a 3.5-10X Leupy with M3 knobs (pre MK4) on my 700 bolt gun. I highly recommend that optic.

That's my next step.  I'm thinking Leupy also, but know nothing about them.  I found a Leupy base and medium rings on the EE, so I'm starting there.

These are the rings/base.  Good start?

Thosre are OK rings to start. Are they 1" rings? I have a similar set on my hunting rifle which have held zero for years.

I'd suggest spending some time on the precision rifle forum before buying an optic. The more $ models have some very nice features for long range shooting, but you may not need them if you are only going to shoot 100yds.

I have Leupold mk4 base and 30mm rings on my precision 700.

I got my 700 SPS Tactical in .308 at Hunter Sports a few months ago. I was in the store last week and he had two on the rack. I believe one was .223 and the other .308.

They were nice at Colisium.  I went in and said to the old guy, "I'm looking for a Remmy 700 SPS tactical.  It's listed on there website as only availible to there 'Premier Dealers and it lists you guys as a 'Premier Dealer.'" Well he said he check and he starts handimg me other Remmy 700 with synthetic stocks in .308.  They were nice, but I really wasn't looking to spend 1200-1500 on a rifle that day.  Well another guy who seemed like the Manager said he thinks he saw one down stairs.  My guy goes down for a few minutes then the Manager guy goes down.  Now my guy goes up and asks, "you definitely want the SPS Tactical huh?"  I said, "Yes, please, if it's possible."  A few minutes later the Manager guy comes up with a big smile and a dusty box (soon to be my dusty box).  Now mind you, the place was rockin' and I was seriously impressed with the help they gave me, and I highly recomend them.

That particular gun was NICE!!!!
Did he get the DROOL stains off the scope that I left?

SP10, Aimless and a few others have nice shooting 700s, Aimless's trigger and SP10's are SCARY light...LOL!

PS I'm not a huge fan of the Houge stocked guns as I see too much material in the barrel channel that CAN'T be free floated....
PS to the original poster, THANKS FOR BUYING REMINGTON, YOU HELP FEED MY FAMILY!

Which Dicks? When I called the one in Smithtown two weeks ago they said they have them in sporatically. I called them today and the guy on the phone said they never carried them.

Dicks carries the SPS "Varmints" locally. They were sold with a "remington scope for around $500 OTD last year. All sorts of threads on ARFcom about them. Very good gun for the money. A friend of mine bought the .308 SPS Varmint. Sub MOA.

Dicks isn't very "tactical"
