Is it illegal to ship ANY firearm magazine to a private(non FFL) individual in New Jersey? The reason why I'm asking is because a buddy of mine that lives there got a visit from a postal inspector.  He ordered 4 ten round mags delivered to his home.(via USPS) The postal inspector came to his home a few days later saying that something that looked like a firearm magazine, showed up in an x ray of the package; addressed to his home. My friend freely admitted that he ordered some mags. The postal inspector went on to "warn" him that since November of last year, it is illegal, in NJ, to have magazines shipped to anyone other than a FFL dealer. A search of the NJ State Police Website, NRA Website and USPS Website listed no such law in existence. Does such a law exist or is the postal inspector full of shit?

AFAIK the postal inspector is full of shit.
Your buddy should call him on it
IMHO

That's what I thought. However, why would a postal inspector  even make a visit for something that isn't illegal?

My cynical mind tells me that it was an opportunity for a potentially dirty usps employee to case your buddy's place.
Where there are magazines, there are firearms.

Something just doesn't seem right about this.

Why would the Postal Inspector actually go to this guy's home?

Why not just call?

If he was that concerned that your friend was breaking the law why not involve LE?

Just doesn't make sense to me.

Can you reveal the town?

Yeah, sounds like BS. You can legally purchase them in person from a store. You can legally buy them online and have them mailed. Besides, how does a short, square 10 rounder look like anything other than a block under xray? Follower and spring maybe?

OP,
For reasons yet to be determined, it seems your buddy is pumping sunshine up your leg. No such law exists.

I just received to Sig P226 mags in the mail today I bought off Gunbroker. Oddly enough they didn't come with a Postal Inspector.

Should ask for your money back.

I believe its BS.  Postal Inspectors do not do stuff like that.  It was probably someone pretending to be a Postal Inspector.  Do you have the PI's name and contact info?

It's no BS. It really happened the way I described. Seems like the postal inspector was FOS; as you guys say no such law exists. BTW, the location was Newark.
