Issue with opening a contract is the precedent it sets.
In this situation, all should pull together for the collective good. I'd forego a 3%, if it meant saving someoe's job, I'd also take a work redution too. Problem is, they'll take the 3%, enforce a work reduction and proceed with the layoff's... Then outsource to private vendors when they can't get the critical work done. They do not need to open the contract, that is what the Governor wants Foregoing the 3% can be achieved in an alternate manner, without opening the contract. Right now it is just a muscle game. You have 9000 layoff's you will spike the capital districts unemployment rate into the double digits. Nobody wants that. Remmeber, an election year is coming up, Governor doiesn't have a chance... but the other elected Dems do. Patterson at this juncture is very un predictable and can cause alot of harm, he has nothing to lose. Politically he is toast. |
