Hi all,

I’m doing my first AR build and am looking for suggestions for what muzzle brake/comp to get.  I think I’d like to go with either an A2 style brake or one of the PWS brakes, but am open to any suggestions.  This brake will be perm attached to a BCM 16” mid-length upper so it needs to have standard threads.  So far from searching around my list of possible brakes are:

-PWS FSC556
-PWS DNTC
-Cavalry Arms Cav-Comp
-Branson Comp
-EGW Comp
-KKF A2 TakBrake

Anyone have any experience with any of these brakes?  Any others I should add to my list?

Here’s the list of things I’m considering in making my decision:

-Do any of these brakes have any affect on the accuracy of the AR?  Could they improve or worsen the accuracy?
-How well do each of these brakes work at reducing muzzle rise/recoil?
-What affect do these brakes have on muzzle flash?  I would prefer not to increase muzzle flash any more than there would be on a naked muzzle as I know some brakes do.  Any of these brakes reduce flash a bit (besides the FSC556)?
-By how much do these brakes increase the noise/blast?  Again I would prefer not to get a brake that significantly increases noise over a bare muzzle.

In addition to these factors I would lean more towards a brake that has been approved by the ATF as being a non-flash suppressor such as the PWS DNTC and FSC556.  Anyone know if any of the other brakes I listed have been submitted to the ATF and been approved?

Also, what’s the deal with the grenade launcher brakes?  We can’t have brakes that are a certain external diameter because they are capable of being used as a grenade launcher?  Does this apply to NJ or just NY?  Anyone know if the above brakes are ok in this respect?

Thanks for all input!

FSC556 imo, badass break, looks good, works great. Also ATF classifies it as a non flash supressing device so its all good. Also from my experience, its not as loud as most comps out there

Just got this back from ADCO....permanently attached to my Colt. Hope to shoot it soon. I bought it for all of the above listed reasons.

I have either the Wilson Combat or Branson brake on all my AR's. I like the look of the standard birdcage flashider.

I wear hearing protection so I really don't care how loud the report is.

The Troy Medieval brake is awesome for the money. Not loud compared to others, and looks bad ass

One that is often over looked, I feel, is the RRA Tactical Brake. I have this on a middy of mine and it is a solid preformer. Inexpensive, it also isn't too loud but at the same time really keeping the muzzle down and allows for fast follow up shots. Noise to the shooter isn't much worse than a standard A2 birdcage.

yeah, i like the 'bad ass' aspect of the troy... have one mounted on my sabre m4-style setup.

speaking of sabre, their 'gill brake' seems like a nice choice... albeit a bit expensive.

After trying A2s, Vortex, AK - I've gone with all DNTCs (Flash hider, Plain and the Aggressive) on the prebans I own.

Even though the ARs don't have much recoil - these brakes make it even less.

Shameless pic

Thanks for all the responses.  Looks like the FSC556 got the most votes so I'll probably go with it.  I was kind of hoping more of you would like one of the less expensive brakes to save me some money

I'm not a big fan of the looks of that Troy brake or some of those brakes that look more like they're designed for competitions like the ones ZEROTHOMAS posted pictures of.

I actually don't even love the looks of the FSC556, I prefer the looks of the A2 style brakes, but don't want a lot of added noise and flash.
