If I was trading one handgun for another... in other words... NOT buying... would I have to go through the same steps as if I were buying... meaning getting the lame license and all that silly crap?

If so what exactly do I have to get? Purchasing license and then an additional handgun one?

Why not? I don't think the state cares what (if anything) you paid for it. I would think that the same rules apply. By the same token if you were a felon and your grandpa died and willed all his guns to you, do you think that the state would let you have em legally?

So IMHO, yes an FID + hundgun permit but others here can verify this better than I can

"Permit to Purchase a Handgun and Form of Register" is needed for each handgun acquired for a resident of New Jersey.  Inheritance is an exception as long as one is not a prohibited person.

But it's not a purchase. Really... it's almost like someone is giving it to you... and you're giving them something. And since the neither are "technically" registered... how would anyone know any different?

Your choice. Follow the law or not.  It is up to you.
