A friend of mine has purchased a Saiga in 7.62. It will only accept 10 rd mags. I have read that the rifle can be modified to accept standard AK hi-cap mags or the mags themselves can be modified to fit the rifle. Hi-cap Saiga mags are definately a no-no here in NY. My questions are, with the proper amount of US made parts, can the rifle be modified to accept standard hi-cap AK mags and still be GTG in NY? Can you modify a standard hi-cap AK mag to fit or would this be considered producing a "new" hi-cap mag?

I converted my x39 Saiga (still waiting to do my other one too ).

Yes, you can use regular AK mags in NY, they just have to be pre-ban (which are easy to come by with AK mags).

It makes no sense to modify the mags.  Then you would have to modify every mag you have, for use in the Saiga.  Plus, you run the risk of them not locking in tight on a regular AK if you swap mags between the 2.

The best way is to modify the mag catch on the rifle itself.  Then, it will accept all regular AK mags.  You'll also need a bullet guide installed (get it from Dinzag, and make sure to get the kit.  It comes with everything you need to install it, which is only a drill.  Or drill-press if you have one, to make it easier).

Keep 922r in mind when doing all of this.  922r is federal, and completely separate from out AWB.  Check the Saiga forums for more info.  There's a couple of us NYers over there.

(Gratuitous pic of my Saiga that I converted )

My brother, Thirsty has also done this.  You can PM him and I'm sure he would also explain to you how it's done.

ETA:  The main problem you will have when getting Hi Caps is the feed ramp.  The above post corrects that issue.  My brother needs to get a feed ramp for his.

Tell him to order from Dinzag.  He's just gotta check to see what kind of trunnion he has (round or flat), and order accordingly.  Like I said in the other post, make sure to get the "kit", not the guide only.

If you read on the Saiga forums at all, you know Dinzags reputation, and it's about as good as it gets.  When I ordered my kit from him, the guide was a hair to thick (there was a bad, small batch of these).  He sent me a replacement, told me to scrap the old one, and also gave me a 10% coupon for his website.

He's a great guy to deal with.

The dealer that my friend purchased the rifle from stated that it "supposedly" has the proper made US parts. Is there a way to verify this? What should he look for to identify US made parts? Thanks

Not being a wise-ass, but most US made parts are stamped "US".  Most, not all.  Tell your buddy to ask the dealer, specifically, what parts were changed out for US made ones.

Post up a picture of your buddys rifle. Most of us should be able to tell if it's got say, a saw grip, or K-var furniture on it. Get a good look at the trigger and see if it says US on it.
