| I am looking to buy my first AR. I live in the Rochester NY area and have kinda narrowed my choices between the colt 6920 and the colt 6721. After looking around however I was not sure if it was possible to get these guns in a ban complaint format from colt. Do you know if these guns would be legal to own and if they are not what would need to be done to them for me to own one. Thanks alot! |
...with extras... If you want a post ban version then the stock will have to be pinned and you'll have to loose the bayo lug and flash hider/threads. Since this is your first AR, does it have to be a Colt? You could build up a very reliable clone for significantly less cash out of pocket. I'm sure one of the many Rochester area people could even help you out if you needed it (myself included though I don't have a great tool collection).

Unless your a LEO you can't legally buy a new Colt 6920, 6721, or 6520 as they are all post 9-14-94 "Assault Weapons". If you really like the Colt 6920 (semi-auto M-4) you should try to find a Colt MT6400c. The MT6400c is as close to a real Colt M-4 that a non LEO in NYS can get. I'd try the EE or gunbroker. You might be able to find one, but they're around $1200.00!!! You could also look for a post ban Bushmaster M4 which is also nice and almost 1/2 the price of the Colt (as raysheen suggested)... We use Bushmaster M4s at work and I can honestly say that Bushmaster ARs are Great! Good Luck, 1981 |

Since you have to pin it anyhow the carbine stock loses it's appeal right there, an A1 or A2 fullstock is more comfortable and promotes better sight picture. See if you can warm up to a fullstocked carbine. Rock River Arms makes a really nice rifle too. Pete at Legal Transfers hooked me up on my complete upper. He's fast too, I had to special order a RRA NM post ban upper because I couldn't fine one listed anymore. I got it in less than 2 weeks. Another supplier that two friends used was PK firearms. They were quite happy with them. We went the build your own lower route and add an upper route. It was the most economical way at the time. Hope this helps in some way. |
| Yeah you're probably looking at that 6400c if you want a colt carbine. I would dump the fixed telestock for a regular stock. That's one you are probably going to have to buy off the net and have brought into a dealer here. I'm not aware of a Colt stocking dealer in New York. |
Yeah that's what I thought. In any case you don't want a receiver marked "Restricted LE, Military/Government" in the PRNY. www.floridagunworks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=FG&Product_Code=1802&Category_Code=_SALEFIREARMS Colt M4 carbine, marked "Law Enforcement Carbine", "Restricted LE, Military/Government, Export only" on receiver. |
I think they do say that on the side of the magazine well on the side that has the ejection port. I would assume a 6400c does not say that. The 6400c is still listed for sale on the Colt civilian site. |
| Yea I was planning on having the stock swapped out for a full sized one anyways if I did purchase the gun. The main reason I was looking into getting either one of those is that they have all of the features I want in a AR. I am not closed minded when looking into other brands though, I have just heard so many good things about the colts I figured while I had the money I would buy one of the best now and save myself later on down the road. What kinda of AR's do you guys have or would recommend for someone like myself. I am willing to spend a decent amount of money on this so my options are not that limited. I am looking for something with a detachable carry handle, either in carbine or mid length configurations, mainly will be used for plinking but would like to be able to use it for other things as well. I appreciate all of the responses. |

The only reason to buy a Colt is to get a preban rifle/receiver so you can configure it anyway you want to. Even that sucks because almost all have non-standard pins and large hole uppers which require a PIA offset adapter to mount a small hole upper. STAG, RRA and BM all have excellent NY compliant rifles off the shelf if you don't want to assemble one yourself. As has been mentioned in this thread Legal Transfers can hook you up with just about any compliant configuration you want. www.ar15sales.com/ ETA: Your best bet is to drive to NH, pick it up and never come back to NY.

That's one of the engineers from Surefire, I think. He probably regrets the original photo at this point. |
Dooner070, If you ever come to the conclusion that its far easier to build it yourself than to try and find exactly what you are looking for off the shelf, shoot me an IM or am email. I can help you build your AR exactly to your specs (keeping in mind the AWB compliance issues). I've got all the tools you need to build it, and my cost for helping is very affordable: free I live in the Rochester area (Greece), and I enjoy working on AR's: building, repairing, fixing, etc. Anyway, good luck with your journey into the oddessey of AR15 rifles. -Matt |
It should raise a few chuckles when they are slapping the cuffs on when you bring it in for CoBIS testing. |

All current Colt civilian rifles are OK in NY. I don't know if current Colt civilian rifles have standard fire control pins/parts and small hole lowers. If they don't that would be a very good reason to avoid them. They also come with a stupid 9 round mag. www.coltsmfg.com/cmci/rifles.asp |
