| I was told that in NY if you are going to hunt with an AR15 you can't have a magazine that holds more than 5 rounds. I haven't seen any 5 round mags anywhere. So what is the solution? |
|
Capacity can NOT exceed six rounds, and that includes the one in the chamber. Do not whatever you do just put 5 rounds into any mag that can hold more and go hunting in NY. Some DEC officers don't think too highly of the EBRs in the first place, and its an easy check for them to make, they just have to unchamber the round and see if it fits in the mag with 5. Twenty bucks is a ridiculous price (my Bushy came with a five round mag) but I think since you will spend that on the license alone, and have the mag for quite a long time... In addition, many feel that a .223 round is not ethical to take deer, so if thats the quarry, just something to think about. Although I would much rather take my ARs upstate, I would lug my Marlin .35 instead. |

You could get some 20rd Colt preban mags and block them with a metal insert similar to the Colt factory blocked 20 rd mags that were blocked to 5 rds. If you want I'll post some pics and dimensions of the steel insert. Or get new 5 round mags from an ar15.com dealer: www.44mag.com/prodinfo.asp?number=CP5 $14.99 each 5.56 AR15 Magazine 5rd Aluminum CProducts CProducts 5rd .223/5.56 AR15 rifle magazine. Mil-spec aluminum body. Made to the same specs as their popular 20rd and 30rd magazines. Chrome silicon magazine spring, gray Magpul follower, black Marlube finish. |

My first one was a wooden block I made to fit inside the magazine spring and limited the magazine to 5 rounds. As long as it isn't readily removable in the field (arguable) it's ok, just like a shotgun's magazine tube plug. Cannot be readily removable in the field such as using a snap cap dummy to limit the magazine. Don't fool around with this, just do it. It's a misdemeanor offense lumped in with loaded firearms in a motor vehicle and shooting from a public highway. You don't want a criminal record for something so easily avoided. A member here was very kind to give me one of the old 5 round limiters from the 80's. They were a piece of hardened flat sheet metal that was bent in the shape of a C. |

CProducts sells 5 round mags that work well. I use a couple of them for predator hunting with the AR. CProducts 5 round mags |

I ended up getting a 5round magazine from the dude who sold me my preban AR. Great deal, and really cool dude. As far as the discussion of .223 for deer, I don't see a problem at all. If that round is good enough for the military to use on people, then I don't see a problem using it for deer, unless you are a poor shot or using the wrong ammo. |
| When you get a deer with your .223 SPs, please post how the hunt, shoot, and 'taking' went. I would love to use my AR instead of that shoulder killing .35 Marlin but remain reluctant to do so as I feel that if I miss the vitals by just a few inches, that .223 just made for undue suffering, and thats not what I want my hunting experience to be about. (Don't forget that humans can not tolerate what a wild animal can, and won't run off several hundred yards with a gut shot or lung shot like Bambi will.) |
Did you see the pics? Read through the link. Many of the guys there are posting pics of the deer they killed with .223s. www.nodakoutdoors.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=99285 |

Sherm, Yep, just looked again. My real quandary is that my friend and hunting partner is also a DEC instructor and although he primarily bow hunts, I know that he does not think that a .223 has enough "throw weight." I can hit a softball offhand with my AR at 100 yards, but would be lucky to hit a volleyball the same way with my Marlin. Probably just recoil fear, but maybe I need to revisit my "preferences." I actually do agree with you guys, its really all about shot placement, and I have complete confidence with my match triggered, fluted and floating 16" barrelled, flattopped and scoped Bushy. Can NOT say the same about anything else I shoot. Keeping on topic; What ammo for "extreme prejudice" of a typical Catskills whitetail do most of you guys recommend ? |

5 rounds mags are legal to make at home....the metal c bend is the best for function..wood blocks, long screws from the bottom up. pop rivits ,scant the drill press...all basic....all works... 22 cal deer hunting..up close out to 300 yards..222 cal 55 gr lead nose soft points bullets, when a bullet is placed in the chest area there is more organ scrambling damage and shock power then a 165 lead head 30 cal..... ....the 222 is the rifle I give to small or young folk their first few times out, easy recoil... have seen many, many deer shot in the engine room w/ both 3006 and 222....some time they drop, not even a twitch, and sometime they bolt llke hell for short yardage to tumble down stone dead... |
