Sorry to hear of your dad's passing.
As long as you are NOT a "disqualified person" (see the Certificate of Eligibility and answer questions #1 thru 10 in part 2) then you should be good to go.  If you don't already have a NJ FID Card you should apply for one.

As far as registration goes, it is completely voluntary for Jersey-legal weapons.  My vote is DON'T DO IT. Assault weapons (Jersey's definition) are another story altogether.

Sorry for your loss.

Any siblings?  They might have a say in who gets the firearms.  Also, if your mom is still living (I am not an attorney), doesn't the spouse inherit all unless they are willed to you.

Sorry for your loss.

Don't go to the range with the weapons until AFTER you have your NJFID of course.

The AK is probally a WASR 10, SARCO was and I think still is selling them. Just as long as you have no mags that hold more than 15, and no bayo lug, flash hider, or folding stock you should be ok. Is the mag well double stack or single?

yeah that sounds right if i can remeber i think it was sarco. and i bealive the mag is doube like the ar15 mags? but the mag is only about 5 inches long and has a small curve to it

That would be a 5 or 10 round mag. 100% NJ legal.

I cannot find a NJ law that says you need a NJFID to inherit firearms. The only thing I found is where it says you cannot be a disqualified person.
I also didn't see a law that says you need a NJFID to transport firearms to/from a range or hunting.
Am I missing something that would say he needs a FID?

I also didn't see a law that says you need a NJFID to transport firearms to/from a range or hunting. YOU DON'T. YOU DO HOWEVER NEED TO TRANSPORT THEM IN A LEGAL MANNER ie CASED, UNLOADED, INACCESSIBLE.  SOME RANGES REQUIRE THAT YOU HAVE A FID IN ORDER TO BE ASSURED THAT YOU ARE NOT A DISQUALIFIED PERSON.

Am I missing something that would say he needs a FID? ONLY IF HE WANTS TO BUY A LONG ARM, OR DEMONSTRATE THAT HE IS NOT A DISQUALIFIED PERSON.  HE'S PLAYING IT SAFE (NOT A BAD THING TO DO IN THE PRNJ)

A friend of mine had a similar situation, the NYSP said no paperwork for blod to blood, but marriage did not count, file the forms

Thanks for the reply njJoniGuy.

I don't see why we should encourage someone to go above and beyond what the law requires. It's bad enough NJ has some of the most restrictive laws in the country, but why should anyone voluntarily make things harder. I would, however, encourage him to get a FID for the purpose of buying more firearms if he plans on staying in NJ.

First, sorry to hear of your loss.

"Being" eligible and qualified is fine and everything, but the FID will keep you from having to "prove it down at the station". It's just better to have it and it's good that the app. is already in the works.

In the meantime, make sure what you've inherited passes the "banned list".

As far as them "being yours", I'd just take possession and call it a day.
Do not register them, as you are not required to.

ok thank you and everyone for the help so in other words im pretty much set and yeah I have the gun safe key so thats all set for me i know all of the rules and what not as far as going an coming from the range my ID card is in procces and the only gun that could be banned is the sarco "ak47" but its dosent say ak47 and the mag only holds 8 rounds i was told thats fine. so all just wait until i have my id card and then go to a range and start shooting again...thanks

thanks guys yeah so i noticed the weapons can stay as they are and not to transfer them over to me. And i just recently found some of the papers which is great. Since i paid for the idcard and it should be done in a month or so i will just wait for it to play it safe. Im not in any rush i just wanted to make sure i was doing everything "legal". And the time of yr is hard there is not many places to shoot by me and fort dix i think closes dec. but thank you very much for you help

Also, you might decide you want to buy another firearm someday..this means you wont have to wait then.  Also, there WILL Come a time i have no doubt that NJ fill force you tha have an FID to purchase any ammunition in this state.
