Can you mount an optic on an A2 upper? Or do you have to get a flat top upper?

Haven't gotten that far yet. I know I want to mount a scope eventually, so I was wondering if I had to go with a flat top upper. I would prefer to get an A2 style upper but if that means I can't mount the scope I'll have to go with the flat top.

Just get a flat top. You can buy a mountable A2-style carry handle for that traditional look, and still be able to take it off and change the optics as you like. Modular = better.

Check out these two inexpensive mounts:

I have my Eotech mounted on the Z-mount, but it sits a bit too high to co-witness.
But for $20, it works!

I have a 3-9x40 scope mounted on my A2 handle and although the cheek weld isn't perfect it works ok.

I went for years (read 1977 to the mid 90's )with a traditional carry handle upper with either a 3x Weaver scope or an Armson OEG mounted with no problems.
Get what you want... you can always buy another upper if you mount something else!

I still have the OEG mounted on an A2 preban govt upper.

I would go with the flat-top.  If you get the A2 and then mount a scope you will most likely have cheek weld issues.  If your mounting a scope then I'm assuming your looking for some accurracy out of the set-up.  So cheek weld would be important as a poor cheek weld will be detrimental to accurracy.  It can be done but why make it harder on yourself.

To get the best cheek weld with an A2 upper you really need a cheek pad. It pushes you head up into a perfect alignment with the scope.

I prefer mounting low power scopes on my Ar type rifles, most guys just buy a 3x9 and have it over with.
The old school solution was the Armson OEG dot type site, still works without batteries and you can have new tritium inserts put in for night/low light.
